Welcome to another Good e-Reader Exclusive Video Review! Today we check out the brand new Barnes and Noble Simple Touch Reader with Glowlight and conduct a battery of nighttime reading tests!

The Nook Glowlight is the first e-ink reader in the world to utilize LED lights built into the bezel to give you the ability to read in the dark. How does this compare to book lights which have been on the market for a number of years? We compare the Nook Glowlight with the standard LED Book Light. We also compare it to the brand new Solar Focus Kindle case with built in Book Light. Finally, we check out how it rates against the Nook Tablet and iPad 3 for reading at night!

We really put this device through all the paces comparing it to most 3rd party accessories that would give your normal e-reader the ability to read at night. Many people buy tablets because they also allow you to read without depending on having a lamp on or external lights. If you are thinking of buying an e-reader or tablet to read at night, this is the best test to help you make the decision.

Welcome to another Good e-Reader Video Tutorial! Today we teach you how to load ebooks on the new Barnes and Noble Simple Touch with Glowlight! We use three different programs that handle your book loading process quite differently. The ones we focus on today is Calibre, Adobe Digital Editions, and Windows Explorer.

The Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight primarily handles EPUB and PDF books. These are two of the most commonly found digital book formats on the internet. Having the Nook really allows you the freedom to not be locked into any particular ecosystem. You can buy books from other online retailers, as long as their books are in EPUB. Kobo, Smashwords, and many other websites sell books in this popular format.

Calibre is a free open source ebook management software suite. It provides maximum flexibility in handling your book libraries. The essence of this program is using it with DRM-free books, or books you downloaded from the internet that do not have encryption. We show you how to find this program on the internet and the basic functionality of it. The main aspects of this program include being able to edit the title, author name, book series, and add cover art. We show you how to do all of this and then some! Also, when you are done editing your books, you can easily save it directly to your Nook.

Adobe Digital Editions is a free program that you can install on your PC. The essence of this one is to copy books to your device that you have purchased from other bookstores or borrowed from the library. Once you install the program and attach your Nook Glow to your PC, you should see it appear. You can then import your books to your stage and then drag and drop them to your e-reader. Books tend to be copied over super fast and we show you all the steps involved.

The last program we use is good old Windows Explorer! This provides the least flexibility in handling your books, but it is the most commonly used method. We show you the directory structure of your Nook and where exactly to copy the books.

Welcome to another Good e-Reader Exclusive Video Tutorial! Today we are going to show you how to access the hidden internet web browser found in the new Barnes and Noble Simple Touch with Glowlight! The method used in this video is quite different from the previous generation Nook Simple Touch.

In order to start browsing the internet and viewing e-ink photos of cats with funny captions or whatever else you do online, you need to setup your WiFi. Once you have connected to your local network you need to access the SETTINGS menu. Select Social next and then click on Connect your Facebook, Twitter, and Google Accounts. We are mainly concerned with the 3rd option which says “Link your Google Account” and then click on Forget Password. When you select this option a small HOME button appears on the very bottom of your navigation bar. Once you click on that you are greeted by the Google Search Bar and you can now slowly browse the internet.

The Acer Iconia A100 has just received a wide spread release of Google Android 4.0! This brings added responsiveness to the tablet and greater functionality! The app menu interface has undergone a revision and seems more fluid in the way different menus are displayed.  Many apps such as Adobe Flash and Google + have also been optimized for ICS and they join a growing list of programs that are geared towards this new OS.

Personally I liked the new way the gallery was set up. It seems more intuitive to browse for pictures. The keyboard is also a little bit more responsive and maintains a distinctive ICS flavor.

Marvel released their first comic a few weeks ago that used their new Infinity Digital format. This is a very unique experience that gives you full HD comics on the new Apple iPad. It provides innovative features not found on any other platform and gives you a robust format to read your comic books.

The first comic we reviewed for this new format was Avengers VS. X-Men and is entitled “Infinity 1.” Honestly, I love the new comic format and hope the company releases new editions using this platform. You no longer have to pinch and zoom to make text readable. When you read in landscape mode the comics are full page and every different page is unlike the last.

When you turn a page you are greeted by a unique experience. You might have a full color image and when you tap on the right hand side you will see different boxes of text appear. On the next page you might see three different panels appear and then a fourth when you hit the page turn button. In other cases there is cool animation where a character will appear in the background and then appear incrementally closer.

Many comic book companies offer a guided view technology that gives you the ability to view the content, panel by panel. I don’t like this view because it tends to be slower and makes it harder to digest what is happening. The advance of Infinity is an unique way of displaying comics that is innovative. It does not hinder the reading experience and instead actually accentuates it.

PressReader is well known for providing over 2100 different newspapers from all over the world and is one of the leading content delivery systems. The company has just released version 3.1 for the new iPad, to give you retina quality images and text.

If you have never heard of PressReader before, they are a one of the leading newspaper companies on the internet. They are a subsidiary of Newspaper Direct, which is based in Richmond, BC. They have apps for Android, iOS, Blackberry, and a slew of others. They tend to play nice with almost every platform, which is great for people who upgrade to new devices often. They have a solid subscription plan for a paper for around $0.99 and a pay as you go for $29.99, which gives you access to all of their publications.

This video documents some of our experiences with the latest build. I show three different publications to give you a sense of what to expect. Images look crisp and text looks really great. One of the downsides is that sometimes images and text need a few seconds to buffer to give you the highest quality content. This is a problem with the buffer/refresh issues that have plagued a number of apps. Zinio seemed to have solved it with their magazines, which are very image heavy. Hopefully, Press Reader will amend this small issue. Otherwise, this is a very solid upgrade that really delivers quality newspapers not found in any other ecosystem on iOS.

SolarFocus is quickly becoming a major player in the Amazon Kindle scene with their recent solar powered offering. This device will actually charge your Kindle with sunlight, function as a protected cover and allow you to read at night with its built in light source. Really the SolarKindle has it all!

The one thing I really liked about this case was how light and durable it really is. Your Kindle 4 fits very snugly into the case and the bind because its flexible allows you more freedom then a traditional case. One of the main benefits is the solar powered polymer film on the front of it. It will power your case, light and Kindle even an overcast day. The light is also a blessing because you can read with no problems in a dark room, which you couldn’t do without it.

Welcome to another Good e-Reader Video Review! Today we are checking out Marvel and Comixology. Both of these companies have updated their iOS applications to give you HD Comics. Most new comic books issued from now on will be scaled to HD if you have the iPad 3. This video shows you both applications and shows you examples of how SD and HD comics look.

Amazon and Apple have two very extensive ecosystems and bear a number of similarities with each other. If you love reading, both of these devices provide unique experiences with magazines, comics, eBooks, and other types of media. If you are thinking about getting either one of these to read, you want to check out this video to see what one is right for you.
