The Color Factor In E-Readers
By
That butterfly have wings whose vivid colors inspire the poetic spirits in an individual is well known. Now the same mesmerizing flutterers are adding wings to dreams of those with a technological bend of mind.
While for those who are mostly up to reading novels, having color screens might be of least significance. Though there’s no denying the fact that to be able to see a book cover and graphics in vibrant colors would add an altogether new dimension to your reading experience. In fact, color display becomes all that much more essential for reading periodicals and magazines or other graphics-rich content. In fact color display can make e-readers even more appealing to users and will definitely add to the e-reader’s even wider acceptance among book lovers.

Drawing technical inspiration from the butterfly’s wings, specifically its iridescence property, Qualcom is mulling over a project to introduce a color screen to its e-reader, the Mirasol. Expected to be available by the end of 2010, the Mirasol will also be capable of video playback. However, it’s highly unlikely for it to be the lone ranger.
Kindle from Amazon would surely like to add color to their display in its later models. So maybe Kindle 4 or the Kindle DX3 will be featuring color displays. It also looks all set for the Pixel Qi screen technology to become a production reality in 2010 and is likely to be incorporated in many forthcoming e-readers. This type of screen has the added advantage of being able to switch over between transmissive and reflective mode, something that lowers both the cost as well as battery drain. Tranmissive, for those who are new to this technology, is the state where the screen behaves like a normal LCD screen and puts more strain on battery resources. In reflective mode, on the other hand, the screen operates as an e-ink display and is extremely energy efficient. What this means is that such display can make great notebooks that will also double up as e-readers.
It is therefore evident that given the readers demand to add spice and pep to their reading experience; this is now being noticed by the makers as the factor that decides sales of their e-reader.
