Walgreens To Sell Maylong M-150 Android Tablet

By

So much for the Samsung Galaxy Tab and its high price tag. Here is a tablet that also run on Android and comes at extremely down to earth prices. For a paltry 99$ you can pick up one of these tablets,  and it also makes a nice gift for tech savvy friends and relatives in the approaching holiday season.

However, before getting into what the Maylong M-150 Android tablet packs in, one should be forewarned so as not to expect a world of goodness for that amount of money. So its 7-inch of resistive touchscreen having a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels that greets you first thing about the tablet. On the inside, its an ARM9(VM8505+) CPU coupled to a 256 MB DDR memory that does duty. For connecting to the Internet, the M-150 includes Wi-Fi b/g though there is no 3G option available. While its not known how much of storage the tablet provides for, the SD card slot can ensure it remains within decent proportions.

Walgreens is promoting the tablet as a nice and handy entertainment device that can be used to read e-books, access e-mails, play games, listen to music or watch videos. The device can also be used to watch youtube videos which is further aided with its built-in speakers.

On the software front, the M-150 runs Android 1.6 though what can be even more disappointing is that it can’t be upgraded as more and better version of Android become available. However, while this is still unconfirmed, what is confirmed is that its Android 1.6 that the tablet will come with out of the box. And those who might be feeling that’s too way back, they can have solace from the fact that the Dell Streak too came with Android 1.6.

The M-150 Android tablet from Maylong which is known for their GPS units is currently available online from the Drug superstore Walgreens and is charging $4.99 as flat shipping charges on top of the $99 price of the tablet.

There’s software support for 3G via a usb dongle in the OS. The sparse documentation says it supports “some 3G dongles”, but doesn’t say which ones. It comes with a 2G flash file system and 256M of main memory. Although I don’t know much about Android or tablets, I’ve had one of these for a few days have been pleasantly surprised. It’s not an iPad, but does a lot of stuff remarkably well for $100.

Thanks Bob, what kind of video will it support? media player/real player/flash etc?

I gort a M-150 by mail a week ago. It exceeds my expectations. It has all features, camera, Android Market, 3.5 mm ear plug. volume control. I use the dongle to attach a wireless mouse. Attaches to wifi. Only con is almost no instructions in owners manual.

I like vairtech tablets. I just brought one and it works great. http://www.vairtech.net

Walgreen tablet are not worthe buying. They run Android 1.6 and can’t be upgraded. Go with Vairtech. You have 7 days to return it if you don’t want it.

In it’s defense, it is only $99, while the Vairtech is $249. If you have the extra to spend then by all means, but if you want something for traveling abroad (I use my cheap tablet for International travel) or anywhere, you won’t get too upset if it breaks or is stolen. Plus it makes for a great e-book reader and news updater as well.

If you are looking for a less expensive device to view Kindle books, this device does support Kindle. I downloaded three books to it. It says that it is Android 2.2. It DOES NOT use the Google Android Market – rather a 3rd party market. QVC was the only Google Android App (Besides Kindle) that I have on my Android phone that I could put on this device. NOTE: It DOES NOT play the live QVC video feed – which my Android Phone will. Music player is okay, but you have to search for your songs to play them. It surfs the net, but works best with mobile websites. It is an okay device, but it IS NOT the same thing that you get on an Android Phone. However, it is cheaper than the Kindle or the Nook and way cheaper than an iPad.

Good question. The only video I have gotten to play on it is made from a Brookstone iConvert device – And the video lags way, way behind the sound. Would like to know, too. Doesn’t support H264, which my Android Phone does.

I found that the FPS rate seams to effect the sound problem. I am using AiMERSOFT DVD Ripper (Got through GAoD) ) Video settings: Resolution 480×272, Frame Rate 15 fps, encoder Xvid, Bit Rate 512 kbps (for size). Audio Settings: Sample Rate 22050 Hz, Channel 2 channel Stereo, Encoder AAC, Bit rate 64 kbps and everthing works great. Got to get back to Avatar…
