Bookeen Adding New Dictionaries to the Cybook Odyssey
Posted by: | Comments
Bookeen is soliticing assistance from the community to help test new dictionaries for their seminal Cybook Odyssey e-reader! They have been working with various beta testers for the last few days and now have new dictionaries working with their e-reader. Italian, English, English-to-French, and English-to-Italian were the first ones added. They are working on others and the finished product should be available in the next firmware update. If you want to join the select test group you can find the skinny on it HERE.
The Cybook Odyssey was one of the best e-readers we saw at this years CES and was very responsive to common tasks. You can view our review and footage HERE and even Bookeen posted some pictures of Peter and myself at CES HERE.
Hands on with the Cybook Odyssey at CES
Posted by: | CommentsWe are live on the scene at CES 2012 at Las Vegas and we just got our hands on the new Bookeen Cybook Odyssey and is it amazing! This is simply the most responsive e-reader I have ever used. It uses new technology called HSIS, which has been in development for over a year and is a product of the company’s two year relationship with Texas Instruments, who made the processor. The big hyping factors are the animated and scrollable menus that allow you to do amazing things.
The first thing you are greeted with when you turn this device on for the first time is the homescreen. It shows you the last book you have been reading at the top and features scrollable menus that have the books you are not currently reading. You can gesture left and right and see all of the books you own. Normally with e-ink you would not be able to get away with real time animations, but Bookeen managed to pull it off.
When you open a book it plays another small animation of the cover art that starts off small and then takes up the whole screen. When you turn book pages, there is hardly any flickering or e-ink based screen updates. We managed to instantly turn 15 pages within the span of 5 seconds and did not see any glaring problems. One of the benefits of the overall reading experience is that you can tap the touchscreen to turn a page or use the manual buttons that are placed on both the left and right sides.
One of the things that I really liked when reading books is how you can change font size and typeface on the fly. There are 6 built in fonts and 8 sizes. Everything is updated in real time, so you can check out the sweet spot before you commit to any particular changes. If you are not a fan of the default fonts, you can simply load in your own! This means you can use Windows Explorer or any File Manager to copy over Times New Roman, Ariel, or whatever you want! There is also options to take notes and annotations, and then save them in your book. If you want to export these you can do it as an XML file, which is compatible with most major platforms. Bookeen told us that when Adobe releases their new update for Digital Editions you can save the notes and export them to other e-readers or even your PC.
The main library shelf is a thing of beauty and allows you tremendous flexibility in managing large collections. You can pinch and zoom to get various perspectives and there are 5 different options to change. By default, 10 books appear on your main shelf in chronological order. You can then increase the sizes of the cover art or even make it so 20 books appear in two different rows. You can then browse between different shelves or collections by tapping on the screen or hitting the page turn buttons. This entire library shelf system is also animated and everything loads super fast.
The Bookeen Cybook Odyssey does its magic while the unit is idle and this is how it manages seamless animations and manages to avoid the e-ink based refresh problems plaguing most other e-readers. Instead of refreshing the screen instantly, like most e-readers, it refreshes things in the background when you are idle, reading a particular page, or browsing the internet.
This new e-reader is the most responsive one I have ever used and it even surpasses the Nook Simple Touch in speed and the e-book experience. It allows you to really craft everything you want to change on the fly and has no lag at all. It was really amazing. It has recently passed FCC certification, but is not yet available in the USA. The company is, in essence, at CES to find industry partners in North America to carry and distribute their devices.

Bookeen to showcase Cybook Odyssey at CES and Announce USA Release Date
Posted by: | CommentsBookeen is officially bringing its latest touchscreen e-ink based e-Reader Stateside next week at CES. The company has attained FCC certification on its new device, the Cybook Odyssey. Today they told us they will be announcing the release date in which people in North America could order one and have it delivered. This is a great device because it uses new HSIS technology that dramatically speeds up the refresh rate and makes web-browsing on it, the best in the business.
The Bookeen Cybook Odyssey still not available outside Europe
Posted by: | Comments
Bookeen has developed a new e-reader that has been out a few months, it is called the Cybook Odyssey. This is a product of a full year of research and development and uses new HSIS technology. What this really does is give you faster page turns, the best internet web browsing experience on e-ink and one of the quickest on the market. The sad part is Bookeen is making zero effort in getting this device outside of Europe. The last we heard from the company was back at the beginning of December when they were trying to get it passed by the FCC for sale in North America. Something must have gone awry because Bookeen will NOT sell them outside of Europe. Even 3rd party markets like EBAY have hardly any of them available. I have been checking almost every day and have yet to see even one come on the market. Considering how much Bookeen is hyping this e-reader with press releases and trying to draw in customers, it is an exercise in futility if they can’t tap into one of the worlds largest tech markets. Repeated interview requests with the company continued to receive no answer.
Hear the Call to Adventure with the Cybook Odyssey
Posted by: | CommentsThe Cybook Odyssey beckons you to hear the call to adventure with their latest e-reader. The Research and Development labs have been busy over the course of the latest year developing new technology (HSIS) to provide a new kind of e-ink experience. In conjunction with Texas Instruments the company has released their Cybook Odyssey in Europe and have told us it will be available in the USA and Canada in the next few days. It was originally planned to be released earlier but they were thwarted by the dastardly FCC!
Bookeen has already released a new firmware update for their new gadget which brings Optimization of the reactivity and the sensitivity of the touch interface and making animations scroll more fluidly. The company also told us in an exclusive interview that they were developing dictionaries in 12 different languages and will release a firmware update in the next few weeks to warrant more attention from international markets. What else do they have in store for us? It is planned to support some ePub3 features such as Chinese, Japanese & Korean vertical layout and CSS3 Ruby very soon. Also, handwritten notes are planned however other features are higher priority so they will not be available in the immediate future.
The company a few days ago released a series of videos that document some of the most exciting selling features of it. Check them out.

Bookeen put the word out today that the Cybook Odyssey e-reader will be released November 22nd and cost 150 Euros. It will be available for pre-order starting the 10th of November on Bookeen’s website and from retail partners. This is the first device released by the company to take advantage of their propritary HSIS to provide High Speed e-Ink.
This new device will feature a six inch e-ink pearl display that is fully touchscreen. It will be running on a 800 MHZ Cortex A8 processor. The company developed the processor in conjunction with Texas Instruments the same way Amazon, Sony, and Kobo partnered with Freescale to make custom chips.
The Cybook Odyssey is delivered with over 100 books in order to get the reader started (more than 30 in English). This technological gem is set to definitively revolutionize e-reader devices thanks to its instantaneous ergonomic interface.
What is the new HSIS technology in the new Bookeen Odyssey?
Posted by: | Comments
Bookeen announced earlier in the month that they will be soon releasing a new e-reader called the Odyssey. It is set to be on a six inch e-Ink Pearl display. The big hyping factor in this new device is the new HSIS technology but was scant on the details. Today Bookeen provided us with some updated information on what it was all about.
So what exactly is HSIS found in the new Bookeen e-reader? HSIS is an architecture developed by Bookeen and results from 2 years of research & development. This architecture is made of hardware and software components in order to boost electronic ink.
Bookeen talked to us about cornerstones on the technology and how they applied to their new device. It brings optimized software stack and algorithms, developed with quality and performance in mind from the ground up. The main goals are to increase computing speed and refresh display rate thanks to a very sharp display management.
An E Ink Pearl touch display providing a best-in-class e-paper reading experience. It is also going to be using the Cortex A8 processor, developed by Texas Instruments in partnership with Bookeen, which brings pure and efficient horsepower.
So what does this bring in the table in terms of end user performance? They are bringing record battery life, faster page turns and is the first e-paper reader to provide rolling menus or a scrolling web browser.
The core technology under the hood can be applied for both grayscale e-ink and e-Ink Triton, which displays color.
Bookeen Launching a New e-Reader Called the Cybook Odyssey

Bookeen has been in the e-reader game in Europe for three years with various offerings such as the Orizon and Opus. The company has been issuing new videos during the last year demonstrating many new technologies. One of the best ones was the seamless web browsing and playing high frame-rate video using e-ink. Today the company announced on its blog that they will be releasing the Cybook Odyssey in Europe in the next few weeks.
The Cybook Odyssey features a six inch e-ink pearl display that is fully touchscreen. It will be running on a 800 MHZ Cortex A8 processor, adding to the enhanced speed of the device.
Bookeen is hyping new technology that it developed to contribute to a better reader experience. It is called HSIS and not much is known other then the company using nonsensical marketing hype.
The rumour right now is that the device may use the same IR technology found in the Kobo Touch and Sony PRS-T1. People are also mentioning the price may be close to 200 Euros in terms of cost.
Bookeen Shows off Real Time Internet Browsing
Posted by: | Comments
Bookeen has been tempting us recently with some videos demonstrating their breakthroughs in e-ink technology. The last one we saw showed some cute animated bunny rabbits. Their latest video is much more provocative. Today we have real time web browsing on a Pearl e-ink display.
Many e-reader companies that provide a truly e-ink experience such as the Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble Nook, and Pocketbook e-readers suffer from the frame-rate issues that plague current generation technology. This latest video from Bookeen is truly impressive because it utilizes the same Pearl e-ink display found in the Kindle 3 and Sony PRS-650. Although the company did mention it used some custom hardware, it is really nothing that crazy.
Here is hoping Bookeen uses this technology in its next generation Cybook e-reader.
Bookeen shows off video on new Pearl e-Ink Panel
Posted by: | CommentsThe Bookeen research and development team is working on overdrive these days trying to regain some prominence in the e-reader arena. Most of their current gen e-readers are expensive and rather outdated compared to the low price and value of the Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and others. Today in an attempt to stay relevant with the times, they showed off a new e-ink panel that plays high frame rate video!
The current prototype utilizes e-Ink Holdings Pearl based screen technology. It also is running on a solid Intel Cortex A8 processor. You will notice from the video that the refresh rate is the fastest we have ever seen in an e-ink display.
Although we will not see this technology in an e-reader anytime soon, Bookeen informed us that this video destroys the battery life and will only give you 3 or 4 hours of video playing.
Update Feb 15 2011
Bookeen was kind enough to get in touch with us regarding this video and shed a ton of light on what is going on during this tech demenstration. Claire Jennesson has this to say about the video;
1)The entire demo is done with components available on the market.
For the Hardware architecture, it’s OMAP 3621 (Cortex A8) using its internal Software EPD controller and for the screen it’s a very standard Pearl Eink screen from Eink (ex-PVI). On top there is a bit of Bookeen’s know-how on the software side, but nothing special (this is the way we see it from our side at least).
2)What is interesting also here is that we use a standard H.264 video, no special treatment before loading it on the board. Thus you can understand that the Cortex A8 is able to uncompress the video and drive the EPD controller at the same time. A very demanding task, indeed.
3)In this mode Power consumption is comparable to a standard LCD but WITHOUT backlight. So not that much in fact.
4)The idea here is to show what will be available in our next readers’ generation in terms of speed. In fact this speed will be available in every compartment of the interface. Handwriting will really become instantaneous and completely comparable to what you get on real paper.
Bookeen’s Orizon is the slimmest e-reader, passes FCC
Posted by: | Comments![]()
Guess which is the world’s slimmest e-reader. Chances are that you might blurt out a Kindle or the Nook simply because these sell more than anything other e-book reader out there. Or perhaps you aren’t too cared about their thickness simply because they already are slim enough to not to bother you much about their overall thickness. As things stand now, almost all the latest e-readers have reached the stage of being convenient and comfortable enough to the extent of nobody being too cared of that. But then, here is one company for which the slimness of the e-reader does matter and is willing to push the envelope further.
Its the Bookeen Orizon e-book reader and at just 0.29-inches, its the slimmest out there. Also, the Orizon e-book reader is not just about a slim form factor as there are quite a few other facts associated with the device that can make it create sales chart history. Targeted at the 6 inch category of e-readers, the Orizon e-reader features a SiPix ePaper display having a resolution of 600 x 800 pixels. Internal memory stands at 2 GB while there also is an SD Card slot to further expand storage options up to 8 GB at a time. Then the Orizon is also reported to be compliant with the Adobe ePUB format and will also have access to Google Books alsong with other online e-books sources as well.
The Orizon has just got through the FCC and is priced at $249 a piece for the two color options of Black and White that the e-reader is available in.
