For those who always complain of Intel Oak Trail processor’s power sapping qualities, here are some hard facts that might have you thinking twice before ruling out Oak Trail again. Case in point – the Maestro S tablet from Evolve III that can run Windows, Android, and Maemo Linux. The tablet has been found to show increasing battery performance with Windows, Android, and Maemo or MeeGo operating system in that order. The figures are impressive as the tablet has been found to last 10+ hours with Windows 7, 16+ hours with Android and a range topping 18+ hours with Maemo.

The wide difference in battery life times with the three operating system is likely because of the way the different operating systems utilize the power saving features in Intel’s Oak Trail platform. The chip can disable components that aren’t currently functional, providing a service similar to the “always on” capabilities found in ARM chips. They make this operation possible by allowing devices to download notifications and other data from the internet while running in extremely low power, almost in a sleep-like mode. The above also brings out the fact that Windows 7 isn’t optimized for operation in mobile devices such as tablet PCs or smartphones, something that Android and MeeGo have to their advantage.

The Maestro S which succeeds Maestro launched earlier in the year packs in a 1.5 GHz Intel Atom Z670 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 32GB solid state disk and a 10.1 inch 1024 x 600 capacitive touchscreen display.

Nokia Tablet due out soon

nokia tablet

Nokia has long been rumored to be making a tablet device and the latest that the rumor mills are churning out would like us to believe the tablet might be ready for a release during fall this year. While that is a good piece of news, it should however hardly come as a surprise as all manufacturers big and small including even those hardly related to computing is now into making tablet PCs. In fact, it would have been a bigger piece of news had Nokia not been making a tablet device. The upcoming Nokia tablet is expected to be based on the MeeGo Linux operating system though there has been no official statement coming from Nokia in support of any of these.

However, we also need to keep in mind all that has taken place since the time news of an impending Nokia tablet had first hit rumor world. So while there has been a maturation of the tablet segment along with gradual segmentation of the tablet market to some extent with some distinct categories coming up like those of business or children oriented tablet, the market itself has grown manifold with a lot more players joining in almost every other day. Then there is also the category of budget tablets that apart from having fewer features also allows manufacturers to cut corners at will all under the guise of a cheaper price up front.

Interestingly, one of the most prominent changes worth mentioning has taken place in the Nokia camp itself. In a move that has taken many by surprise, Nokia has decided they have had enough enough with the Symbian operating system and believe its Windows that their future lies in. So while MeeGo has been and continue to find favor with Nokia, it would perhaps be less surprising if Nokia is ultimately seen adopting Android or even Windows for its future tablet program.

In any case, lest not forget all of these are still on rumor turf and are open to the forces of change.

If market researcher Gartner is to be believed, the Apple iPad will be the dominating force in the media tablet segment up until 2015. This notwithstanding the flurry of tablets running Android Honeycomb that are grabbing headlines almost every other day. Then there are other players in the segment that also are expected to make it big, like the PlayBook tablet running the QNX operating system. Gartner believes, in spite of these recent developments, the best the competition can have is an increase in their market share and the Apple iOS will still be reigning supreme with almost half of the market to itself through 2015.

Carolina Milanesi, the research vice president at Gartner said, “Seeing the response from both consumers and enterprises to the iPad, many vendors are trying to compete by first delivering on hardware and then trying to leverage the platform ecosystem.”

“Many, however, are making the same mistake that was made in the first response wave to the iPhone, as they are prioritizing hardware features over applications, services, and overall user experience. Tablets will be much more dependent on the latter than smartphones have been, and the sooner vendors realize that the better chance they have to compete head-to-head with Apple,” added Milanesi.

Google will see its Android operating system scale to second place with a market share of over 38 percent by around 2015, up from the 20 percent it now has under its control. For the iOS, its market share will see a drop from a commanding 84 percent that it had in 2010 to almost half, 47 percent, by 2015. That will still be enough to hold on to the leadership position. Gartner believes iOS will have a market share of 68 percent this year.

RIM’s QNX operating system will be the third biggest player with 10 percent market share in 2015 while Intel’s MeeGo and HP’s WebOS will be able to corner just 1 and 3 percent of the market by 2015.

“Volume will be driven by support from many players, the ecosystem of applications for tablets getting more competitive and some platform flexibility allowing lower price points,” said Roberta Cozza, principal analyst at Gartner before also adding, “The new licensing model Google has introduced with Honeycomb enables Google to drive more control, allowing only optimal tablet implementations that don’t compromise quality of experience. This might mean that prices will drop at a slower pace than what we have seen in the smartphone market.”

meego concept

On Feb 11, 2011 industry leaders Nokia and Microsoft announced plans to form a broad partnership that would utilize there complementary strengths. While there was nothing specifically stated about the future of the MeeGo OS, it appears that both companies will have there hand’s full and the chance’s of it ever making it into a mainstream OS competitor are stacked against it.

MeeGo itself is the product of a partnership between Nokia and Intel to try to bring the best of Maebo and Moblin together. Through borrowing the Moblin core, this should bring all the power of a full fledged OS, to mobile devices. With the integration of the UI (User Interface) from Maemo consumer’s can expect the same user friendly system we have come to expect.

Putting a personal touch on thing’s, Jozef Kocúr has displayed his easy to use UI concept for the MeeGo OS. As seen below, it features a side scrolling layout. Inside of this, each panel has a column. The very bottom of the screen has a menu with heading’s for Board, Applications, Now, Social, Media and System. The easy to read font, catchy icon’s and cohesive color scheme make this concept esthetically pleasing as well.

The concept makes MeeGo look phenomenal, and hopefully it will help to push the development forward. It has been announced that the first system’s with MeeGo on them will be released in the second quarter of 2011, hopefully they keep to this without delays!

Nokia MeeGo tablet sighted

Posted by: | Comments (0)

A picture of a tablet like device bearing the Nokia logo has set speculations rolling in the web world if this is actually the fabled Nokia tablet.  However, apart from the picture with the Nokia logo occupying pride of place on the center of the top bezel of the tablet, almost nothing is known of the device. Like its not known for sure if this is even a tablet PC in the first place and is there is no evidence available right now that can prove its tablet credentials. So much that it shouldn’t come as a surprise if it turn out to be a smartphone. Then it can also be an internal test device used to carry out trials of various features and technologies before their integration into the real stuff.

The complete lack of any specification accompanying the image is making things somewhat less spicy than it could have been. There are a few pointers though in the image if you haven’t already noticed. Like the placement of the Nokia logo at the center is not what one get’s to see on other Nokia devices such as N97 and the N900 where it is relegated to the top left. Another factor that is refuting the device to be actually a tablet is the fact that the image looks to have a display of a just 4.5 inches which is far less to be considered a proper tablet. (Sure Asus has a device which is even less than that though the company is claiming it to be a tablet and not a smartphone.)

Another thing that the image is bringing to the fore is the MeeGo operating system that we know would be powering the Nokia tablet but is being shown here in its native form. This again is not what we know the Nokia tablet would ship with as they have been working on some sort of UI customizations known as Harmattan that would be on top pf the MeeGo software.

So while the image of the supposedly Nokia tablet is welcome, of course a lot more than just a leaked image would be even more welcome. And we would be keenly waiting for what comes next to this.

Here is some more tablet news built around an Intel core. This time, it’s from Russia and the unique aspect of the tablet is that it’s not Android or Windows based. Rather, the tablet that made a public debut at an Intel event in that country runs the Linux based Nokia MeeGo operating system. Also, while we know the tablet is most likely to be called the Nokia Z500, almost everything else about the device is still under cover.

Indamixx 2 prototype Tablet

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Now here is a tablet that can turn out to be the best friend of music buffs – the Indamixx 2. Well, the name of the tablet itself carries a bit of the story as it rhymes both with ‘music’ and ‘mix’ as the tablet will not only allow users to enjoy music but to also do some mix-n-match sort of thing with music as well.

Coming to the tablet, the most interesting aspect with the Indamixx 2 is its operating system – Transmission 5.0, which is basically a music oriented OS that itself has been built around MeeGo. Makers of the tablet justified the use of MeeGo on the basis of the latter’s excellent support for multitouch input. Also, with MeeGo in the scene, anyone who’d like to put the tablet to more conventional uses won’t have anything to complain considering the almost endless opportunities that the OS can present with.

The under the hood story of the Indamixx is made up of an 1.66GHz Intel single-core  Atom N450 processor though the final version of tablet may be endowed with a dual-core chip. This apart, the tablet includes a trio of USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet socket, a VGA output along with analog audio input / output jacks while system memory stands at 2 GB.

However, all of this comes at a price – $999 to be specific.

Nokia has long been charming us with its vast and diverse range of mobile handsets. The Finnish communications company has even started making inroads in the extremely competitive smartphone segment after an initial no-show, a fact that even Apple boss Steve Jobs acknowledges when he said its Nokia that might pose the biggest challenge to Apple’s dominion in the smartphone segment.

However, the Apple boss might have another reason to worry soon as the handset maker is also believed to be in the process of developing a tablet PC and it is targeting none other than the iPad.

“We are always eyeing what I would call the ‘neighbouring businesses’ to see if it would make sense for us to enter it,” said Niklas Savander, executive vice president and general manager of markets at Nokia.

The device what many believe will take forward Nokia’s tablet dreams is the Z500 and is in news right now after a Nokia insider, Eldar Murtazin tweeted: “Nokia aren’t happy with price/features.” This also is some sort of a confirmation of the device that was rumored to be in development ever since the iPad had entered markets and was all believed to be ready by fall of this year.

That’s not all since the Z500 also came to be seen at Nokia’s own Ovi Store, further fueling hopes of the tablet that’s expected to run Intel’s MeeGo operating system. The leak has since long been plugged though not before letting us have a sneak peek of the things to come from the Nokia camp.

Neofonie WeTab

The WeTab from Neofonie was at the forefront of those that were billed as an iPad beater. Of course that was not without reason for its spec sheet carried a bit more weight that that of the iPad. The iPad is certainly an excellent device and accomplishes innumerable tasks remarkably well. But it’s also a fact that there are a lot of things the iPad just can’t do. And it’s in that deficiency that the WeTab scores.

How? Here it is: the WeTab has an expansive 11.6 inch HD capacitive toushcreen display with a 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. The WePad has been provided with a HDMI output, 2 USB ports, and comes integrated with a 1.3 MP camera, all of which is lacking in the iPad. Connectivity options with the WeTab include 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi as well as Bluetooth 2.1.

Powering the tablet is a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, thereby making it possible to run any operating system: Windows, Linux, Android or even OS X in the extreme case. However, while early reports indicate that it would be a customized version of the Android or Linux doing OS duty on the final market ready version, it now looks as if it is the MeeGo Linux along with a suitable user interface running on top of it that would eventually be part of the WeTab when it begins shipping. Unfortunately, there is no definitive information as to when the WeTab will begin shipping.

nokia

According to a Digitimes Senior Research Analyst Nokia may be at the last stage of their push to release a Tablet PC by the end of the year.

They got the low down that an order that 100 engineering samples of the Nokia Tablet PC were ordered from Foxconn Electronics. The Tablet should be around 7 to 9 inches and will feature the MeeGo Operating System. It will also run the ARM processor, no word on what version they are running.

MeeGo is an open source, Linux project run in conjunction with Intel, and Maemo, and Nokia. MeeGo integrates the experience and skills of two significant development ecosystems, versed in communications and computing technologies. The MeeGo project believes these two pillars form the technical foundations for next generation platforms and usages in the mobile and device platforms space.

MeeGo features a three column based type system that remembers the videos and recommends others you might have not seen. For example there is a great looking task manager which blends both the icon-grid view of Android with moveable thumbnails like on WebOS, switched between by using a pinch-zoom gesture.

The default view of the switcher presents the latest accessed task in focus, with the other, different tasks running to the right. Thumbnails are presented in chronological order, as they are opened. It is possible to browse through the thumbnails, one by one, by slowly dragging them, or to use a quick swipe to rapidly pan from one side of the list to the other. Users can use a pinch multi-touch motion to change the switcher into an overview mode. By pinching in, thumbnails move into a grid display.

There is also an Android-style notification bar at the top, which can be dragged down to display recent updates, events and similar information.
Although there is large industry speculation that the Nokia tablet will be on the market by the end of the year, in time for the Christmas season.

There are also rumours that Nokia will offer a SIM card that will allow telecommunication networks to subsidize the cost of the tablet.

Check out the video which walks you through the MeeGo Operating System.

Intel’s Computex keynote was brimming with new technology announcements on Day One at the Computex though the one thing that literally swept away everything else was the 10-inch Moorestown Quanta Redvale tablet running on the MeeGo software platform. The demo was brief but was enough to let everyone know that there will be a lot going for the tablet once it reaches markets in 2011.

The tablet itself in far from being complete and ready for mass production. In fact, it’s just the pre-alpha stage Quanta Redvale tablet that was previewed but what caught everyone attention is its sharp features and breezy performance. The latter though can be attributed to the 1.5GHz Moorestown processor that displayed its prowess at the show by enabling the tablet to playback some 720p quality videos without any fuss whatsoever. This when NVIDIA had serious apprehensions of the Intel smartphone chip being able to come up with a credible performance.

These apart, the Quanta Redvale tablet packs a 10 inch resistive touch screen that’s extremely sensitive to taps and touch and also supports the pinch to zoom feature. It’s extremely thin and light and is easy to use. Well, the viewing angles wasn’t great but we got to keep in mind that the tablet is still in the pre-alpha stage.

The other aspect of the Quanta Redvale tablet that stood out is the MeeGo operating system. For those who haven’t heard of this before, here it is. MeeGo is the outcome of the culmination of two open source Linux operating systems — Intel’s Moblin and Nokia’s Maemo — of which the world first got to know of at the Mobile World Congress held earlier this year.  Also, MeeGo is based on the same software framework as the netbook version though what differentiates the two is the UI that’s far better that what has been previewed on quite a few netbooks. Also, with the MeeGo OS, users have the choice to choose between two modes of the OS – the simple mode which is a basic grid of applications and the panel mode made up of a series of vertical panels. Users can customize these panels with pictures, social networking feeds, and web bookmarks as per their choice. In fact, it’s the ability to customize things as per one’s own wish is what makes the panel mode of the OS that much more desirable. Also, at MeeGo 1.0, this can also be considered as just the pre-alpha version of the OS. So we can expect a lot of fireworks from MeeGo as well as it attains maturity. Not much of MeeGo has been heard before but it seems we’ll come across the term more often from now onwards.

Intel’s own App Up applications store was also previewed though it doesn’t have numbers as of now to boast of. It was also revealed that multitouch apps will be available for downloading post August 2010 as a new MeeGo SDK is planned to be released during this time.

Keep watching for more e-readers news or the latest tablet pc news from Computex.
