An update with build number IMM76 will soon be made available for the Motorola Xoom tablet, claims Droid-Life citing authentic information. The build they say, would be applicable only for those sets of Motorola that are Wi-Fi enabled. This would be the second update after the Android 4.0.3 update has already been issued to the Xoom devices.

Among the features that the tablet will benefit from the new update include the option to lock up the screen using the power button. There would also be improvements mated out to the tablet’s camera while screen rotation speed too will improve. These apart, the overall stability of the device is also supposed to show marked improvement post the update and so would the visibility of the phone numbers. Microsoft Exchange too gets some added EAS policies with the update.

Users would be able to download a zip version of the update if they have a USB drive and then be able to update using the stock recovery mode.

Motorola has announced the launch of its XOOM 2 tablet device in Australia. It is likely that the company is moving forward with the launch at this time because of the impending release of iPad 3, which is likely to happen during the first half of March. Obviously, the next gen Apple tablet will be hogging all the limelight then, which makes it just the right time for Motorola to push ahead with the XOOM 2 tablet now.

There is no denying the new iPad 3 will be miles ahead of the XOOM 2, even though Motorola is claiming the new XOOM is a significant development over its predecessor.

“The Xoom 2 is the highest performing 10.1-inch tablet on the market right now with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and that makes it faster that some of the leading tablets,” said Motorola product marketing manager Sean Pyper.

The tablet from Motorola will have a scratch resistant screen along with a slimmer and lighter profile. The XOOM 2 is also more aesthetically pleasing with more rounded edges. Cost wise, the XOOM 2 will set one back by $720, though Telstra is also offering the same for a more appealing scheme of $59 over two years.

The recently launched Motorola Droid XYBOARD 8.2 and XYBOARD 10.1 tablets are soon going to be provided with some updates. Both the tablet versions will boast of many new features that have been missing until now, which includes global roaming capability. Global roaming will allow anyone to connect to the internet from any place that has 4G infrastructure in place. However, while this will definitely add to the convenience, it comes at a price (and a hefty one at that). Verizon will surely charge a premium for the international roaming facility.

This apart, other goodies the update will bring along include better scrolling when surfing the net. The touch response is also expected to be better. The keyboard will be enabled when the tablet is in a docked condition and there will be improvements in wireless functions of the gadget as well.

The update is 83.8 MB in size and will come in two batches. The first batch will upgrade the Xyboard tablet. After that, the next batch will upgrade the SIM so that it becomes ready to operate in any country.

The total sales of Android tablet for the year 2011 have been recorded to be 10.5 million units. However, Motorola’s contribution to that figure has been a dismal 1 million units, the company’s quarterly earnings report indicated. The report further revealed 200 thousand units of the 1 million to have been sold in the last quarter of 2011.

However, on an optimistic note, Motorola is all set to make available its next gen tablet device, the Xyboard soon. Motorola has intimated the same to its existing customers via email. This would be a continuation of the company’s XOOM line of tablets. Interested people would be able to place their order for the 10.1 inch version of the Xyboard that has been priced at $600 for the 32 GB model and $500 for the 16 GB model. There is the 8.2 inch version of the tablet also available for order that costs $500 for the 32 GB and $400 for the 16 GB model. Orders can be placed at the company’s website.

One feature of the Xyboard tablet that is worth a mention is its display screen which offers a wider viewing angle and boasts of a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. Both the Xyboard models is based on a 1.2 GHz TI OMAP processor with Android 3.2 Honeycomb as the OS. If the latter bit is disappointing, Motorola has stated the Android 4.0 ICS upgrade would be made available very soon.

Other features of the Xyboard include a dual camera setup where a 1.2 megapixel unit does duty at the front while at the rear lies a 5 megapixel camera.

Motorola has been the first to come up with the XOOM tablet running the tablet centric Android 3.2 Honeycomb though it never really got off to a start as far as its sales is concerned.

If one orders for the sets through the Motorola site then there is the offer of free shipping of the goods that is on right now. Maybe it should have been a bit more competitive on the pricing front with the new Xyboard to ensure they put up some decent sales figures.

Motorola has started rolling out the update to Android 4.0 ICS for XOOM users. However, it’s still in the experimental stages right now, and the update will be available to only select users in the United States at first. It’s still under what can be termed as the “Soak Test,” and the update is only being provided to those who had agreed to be part of the test group.

The upgrade process started precisely at 9:00 PM Pacific time on January 12th, and will continue this entire weekend. User response will then be monitored closely to figure out any major bugs and discrepancies. If none creep up, the ICS update will soon be made available to all XOOM users worldwide.

The XOOM, it can be recalled, had been the first tablet device to flaunt the Android Honeycomb edition, though it missed out pulling off a similar feat with the latest Android ICS version. Rather, that credit goes to Asus Transformer Prime, which has been the first tablet to come up with the update to Android 4.0 ICS. However, the Transformer Prime is a generation ahead of the XOOM and an ICS upgrade can’t be expected to push the XOOM tablet devices to the top of popularity charts. Existing XOOM users, though, should be pleased with this development.

Since Google acquired Motorola nothing really has been happening on that front, but in the tablet arena the big G is prepped to receive something fresh. Motorola is calling user with Google experience to test-drive a new program called ‘The Google Experience.’ One of the benefits of this new program and endorsement by Google, is that the device is likely to see a ton of updates.

Not much is known about what this experience will entail and it is applicable to the WIFI model only. It could have something to do with the rumored launch of Ice Cream Sandwich on the tablet in the near-future, or it could be just bundled with all sorts of Google+ offerings.

Motorola has made its XOOM tablet a bit more endearing by offering a steep discount on its price. However, the price cut announced is not uniform as the price that online stores are displaying against the XOOM at their sites varies to quite an extent though all of them are indicating the reduced price.

Koovs is one such site where one can pick up the Xoom Wi-Fi with 32 GB memory for INR 21,500 while the same is showing a price of INR 25,000 for the Xoom WiFi + 3G version. Flipkart is showing INR 26,500 for the WiFi + 3G version of the Xoom. 16 GB version of the Xoom tablet is out of stock and no site lists the item.

The prices mentioned above for the Xoom tablets are substantially lower than what it retailed for when first launched. The tablet used to be available for INR 33,000 which was for the 3G version while the same with just Wi-Fi functionality came for INR 31,000. However, lest you believe the price cut has been done to clear off existing stocks and that the tablet might soon be a piece of junk in a Tegra 3 / Android 4.0 era, well Mototola has announced the tablet will upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich. Currently the tablet runs on Android 3.2 Honeycomb.

Verizon has come up with a new data package for the XOOM tablet that allows for people to pay as per their usage. To this affect, a new update labeled HLK75F is slated for a release in the next few days that will enable XOOM users to opt for 4G usage with no contractual obligations on a monthly basis. Accordingly, Google Setup Wizard has been suitably updated so as to ensure the ‘Pay As You Go’ detection is more reliable when the tablet is fired up for the first time.

What we have here is the pricing structure of the XOOM 2 and the XOOM 2 Media Edition tablets, without waiting for any official announcement from its maker Motorola on the subject.

The price that have been indicated are those that have been worked out by Verizon over a two year period. The price of the tablet per-se would most probably cost another $100 or $200 more when bought off plan. There would also be a further reduction in price for those who go for just the Wi-Fi version of the tablet the exact figures are yet to come to the fore. Also, if the prices does come as a shock, well that can be attributed to the low cost ones that we have seen more of in the last few weeks. These include the Kindle Fire that has set new price benchmarks with a low $199.99 and the Nook Tablet that costs $50 more.

Now coming to the price:

> 32 GB XOOM 2 Media Edition — $529.99

> 16 GB XOOM 2 Media Edition — $429.99

> 16 GB XOOM 2 — $529.99

> 32 GB XOOM 2 — $629.99

> 64 GB XOOM 2 — $729.99

As a refresher, the basic hardware specification of the two tablets include a 1.2 GHz dual core processor at its heart. Also, both the tablets will have 1 GB RAM and dual cameras —  a front facing 1.3 megapixel camera while the one at the rear boasts of a resolution of 5 megapixel. The screen size of the XOOM 2 Media Edition and the XOOM 2 would be 8 inches and 10 inches while weighing 0.85 pounds and 1.3 pounds respectively.

Also, if the price does comes as a bit disappointing, that’s surely because the new crop of low cost tablets from Amazon and B&N that has come our way. Many had thought Motorola’s 8 incher — the XOOM 2 Media Edition would also be along the same lines though — as the price has revealed — Motorola clearly has other ideas. In any case, an 8 inch sized display can be the perfect balance between ease of reading e-books and portability and it will be interesting to see how Motorola positions the tablet or what will be the apps the tablet will come pre-loaded with.

Watch this space as we keep track of developments here.

Here is a tablet PC from Motorola that promises to make your TV viewing experience that much more enjoyable by ensuring you now have an advanced remote control to let you make the best of your TV. Named Corvair, the tablet also happens to be the smallest to come from Motorola, with just 6 inches of display. Also, it’s still a work in progress, as Motorola has yet to officially announce the Corvair, which right now is being put through its paces with cable companies.

However, there aren’t many specifications available of the tablet as yet, though there are some bits and pieces that has come to the fore. The tablet will come with a 4000 mAh battery, which is more than enough for a tablet featuring 6 inch display. But then, more is always better in the power department. The Corvair will be seen spending more time on the coffee table than plugged on to a wall socket. Surely that’s one big advantage that everyone expects out of a remote control device.

Also, another unique aspect of the Corvair tablet is that it has been designed to communicate with a TV or a set-top box via the conventional IR technology as well as the ZigBee-based, no-line-of-sight RF4CE technology. It’s being presumed the tablet will also have the capability to stream internet content on to the TV via Wi-Fi, though this is mere speculation as of now.

Other aspects of the Crovair that we are curious to know of is the price and availability of the tablet, though with the retail box already final, all of these shouldn’t be too far off. Also, with Android 2.3 as the operating system with a layer of customization on top, it remains to be seen if the Crovair will only be limited to the living room as its makers intend, or it could also allow users to catch up with some reading as well. Surely, there is no dearth of e-book reading apps currently available and it will be interesting to see if the Crovair can play host to any of these.

The second generation XOOM tablet from Motorola appears to be hitting the market in UK before Christmas holidays begin. Price of the device is estimated to be €400, as is evident from an image of the tablet has been made available via a print ad for Carphone Warehouse.

Details that one can gather from the ad are that the tablet would have an 8.2 inch display with Android 3.2 Honeycomb as the operating system. Further, the tablet would have 16 GB of on-board storage while the leaked image also points out what is being said here refers to the Wi-Fi only model.

However, while detailed specification has been skipped in the ad, previous leaks has led us to believe the tablet will have a 1.2 GHz dual core processor along with an integrated 1080p HD video capable camera as well. The XOOM 2 was also touted to be able to function as an IR remote control device as well.

However, while we await for the full and final specification to emerge, the one thing that might not go down too well with prospective buyers is the price which does seems to be a bit on the higher side for a tablet offering 8.2 inches of screen real estate. More so since there are cheaper options available in the 7 inch segment. A high price tag for the first gen XOOM led to its downfall so that it recorded shipment figures of just 100,000 units in the last quarter. However, what has also to be said is that the XOOM shipment numbers might be less but is yet comparable with other tablet devices that are in the market leaving aside Apple iPad which has a nook and niche of its own. The last thing we’d like to see is a tablet failing owing to its high price and not anything else. The original XOOM sported decent specs lost out on the price front.

Motorola is doing its best to prop up sales of its XOOM tablet PC, but sadly none of it has been reflected in the sales figures released by the company during the Q3 earnings call. The total number of XOOM tablet devices shipped in the last quarter stand at a dismal 100,000, units which looks even more puny compared to the 11.1 million iPads sold during the same period. What makes the XOOM sales figure look even more pitiable is the fact that this marked a deterioration in its demand, as the tablet found 440,000 buyers in the quarter prior to the last. No doubt, the presence of other tablets from Samsung, Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and so on are posing stiff competition to the XOOM that is finding itself being increasingly cornered in consumer preference.

However, it’s not all over yet with Motorola expected to announce a next gen XOOM soon. We have already come across reports of such a device making it to the FCC and a formal launch before the holiday season is all too imminent. In the meantime, Motorola has also introduced a number of measures, like an upgrade to 4G along with price cuts, and we will have to wait until the next quarter to see if any of these has any positive impact on the XOOM’s sales.
