Default Two new "drives" appear when Pandigital Novel is connected to PC; why?

When trying unsuccessfully to find how to back up any system files (and data) before applying the new update, I noticed something strange. It is similar to what I occasionally see when some flash drives are plugged in.

I see "two" drives instead of one.

One is labeled: PD-Novel and contains these folders:
    .adobe-digital-editions
    DCIM
    Digital Editions
    Downloads
    eBooks
    Music
    Photos
    Videos

The second drive is labeled simply: Removable Disk
and any attempt to open it returns the message:
Please insert a disk into Removable Disk

So I am a loss as to where to find the current system to back up as Pandigital suggests and don't understand the purpose of this phantom disk.

I think the phantom disk is your SD card port for your pandigital novel. Because you dont have a SD card in your device, it reads it as non acessible.
