Default Tips for NEW USERS whether you wish to Root or NOT :-)

    Now in Alphabetical order:

3G: If you constantly get "Cannot find Network" when you insert a Sim, don't fret. Simply power Adam off and then power it back on with the Sim in. Adam will now recognise your carrier. Check AccessPointSettings from your carrier or on your phone if it is the same Sim, add the details and you can use GPRS/HSDPA or 3G.

APPSTORE: If you wish to gain access to Amazon Appstore, you will need an account with a US address and credit-card. Amazon is great because it gives away one app for FREE each day in addition to all the free apps. Another good option is Androidpit which has an App Center that can be downloaded. If you find Amazon Appstore or Androidpit App Center not working or your browser giving you frequent "unrecognized server certificate" check the date and time on your Adam. Correct it to the right date and time and everything will work again.

BATTERY/UPDATES: Over the Air updates are still work in progress. Meanwhile, do upgrade to the latest build (April 8th) by following the instructions in this thread, it seems to improve battery life and resolves a host of issues.

BRIGHTNESS/APPEARANCE: If you attach the screen protector, remember to go to Settings and change the Brightness manually to a level comfortable to you. I find that the default automatic setting results in rather dim back lighting. If you have a PixelQi screen remember you don't have to be in the sun to enjoy it. Just place the Adam under a decent light source and turn the back light off to enjoy.

DESKTOP: Appears when you tap the time displayed on the startup panel. Use canvas to paint the whole canvas black and set it as wallpaper (don't need to save it). That will make your icons on the desktop stand out and not strain your eyes as much.

EXTERNAL KEYBOARD/MOUSE: This can be frustrating initially but you will figure out that it can become easy. Remember the "Esc" on your keyboard acts as the "back" button, the "home" button will take you to your desktop and you need to press the left-button on the mouse and drag as you would when using your fingers. F4 will lock your Adam and put it to sleep. If your usb mouse/ketecognisedrecognised, try rebooting with them plugged in (merci Rk Jay). I hope we could get a setting in the next OS that will allow us to customize mouse buttons (enable scroll wheel) and keyboard shortcuts. It will make things even better.

FILE MANAGERS (Merci Francois Brutsch): Get Astro File manager or Ghost Commander that will help you move files around easily. You can also use it to transfer paid apps from your Android Phone to the Adam.

FLASH ON YOUTUBE SOLUTION/WORKAROUND: Thanks to Popov from Bulgaria for suggesting that the reason why we are unable to select resolution on Youtube us that flash does not support mouse over. It got me thinking that our problem is that we are using touchscreens are there is no mouse pointer to hold the option bar back. So, all you need to do is attach a mouse to Adam and keep the pointer slightly above the resolution tab (where the bar will appear and voila it will stay and you can use he mouse to select a resolution. It might take a few attempts to get it right. The only problem now is severe stuttering with high resolution streaming. That apparently is a flash issue which will hopefully be corrected by version 10.3 currently in beta for other OSs. UPDATE Flash 10.3 : This new version eliminates the mouse over problem described above. 720p and above still remains elusive but many flash videos play smoothly. Get the update here:

GOOGLE MAPS UNEXPECTED FORCE CLOSE: There seems to be a problem with the latest version. Simply go to freewarelovers and download any version between 4.0 and 5.0 and it should work.

KEYBOARD/TYPING: Install the thumb keyboard (you should be able to find this at the sites above). Remember to go into settings and change the height of the keyboard as per your liking. If you need Chinese input, you have to download Google Pinyin 1.3.4 (the stock one doesn't work) and set it up. Remember to go into settings to activate/setup the downloaded keyboards before you use them.

LAUNCHER: Try wave launcher. Thus is a really cool app that gives you a transparent launcher bar that you can call anytime and from any app. It is available on Amazon Appstore. Remember you can increase the number of apps on the bar by going into settings.

MARKET/APPS: The one thing that you will be missing is access to market but there are workarounds. You can download apps from freewarelovers dot com/android or majjj dot com (thanks to Majjj). You can also access the Amazon Appstore (provided you register a US account). All in all, hang on and see if the folks at NI come up with a better version of the stock ROM.

ORIENTATION(LANDSCAPE/PORTRAIT) Try using the Adam in portrait mode. Holding it by the rubber handle. This mode makes typing a lot easier and gives you a full view through the browser. You will notice that your hand doesn't hurt as much and you get a nice angle and grip holding the Adam by the handle or simply supporting it with the palm of the non-typing hand. If Adam sometimes does not switch modes when you turn it around bend the top towards yourself and it will do it.

REMOTE DESKTOP: Download Teamviewer from teamviewer.com. This is a great app that allows you to control your lap/desktop remotely. If you have a system constantly on in the office or at home, this will allow you to get that extra bit of functionality that you might need on your Adam.

SD CARD/USB NOT RECOGNISED: Please remember that you need to format your micro-SD
card/USB using the FAT/FAT32 format for Adam to be able to recognise it. Try formatting it on your lap/desktop before plugging it into Adam.

VIDEO OUT/PRESENTATIONS : Two solutions that worked great for me:

a: HDMI to RCA (Composite): I bought this converter from ebay (good seller, shipped really fast) and I can hook my Adam on to a TV that takes Composite (Yellow, Red and White) or S-Video input. HDMI to component converters are available as well. This works well because unlike Full HD 1080p TVs the conventional TV has a lower resolution, so ADAMs output and/or lower resolution videos look really good. Hook Adam to a TV using this, turn the backlight off, attach a wireless mouse and keyboard and voila, you can play all those youtube videos, online channels nicely and they don't look as miserable as on an HDTV. The only downside is that this converter needs external power and cannot be carried around. Here is the product I bought:

b: HP HDMI to VGA Adapter: I was on the lookout for some way to hook Adam up to the projectors that we have in meeting rooms and classrooms so that I could show my presentations using it instead of carrying a laptop or netbook around. After much searching I stumbled on this product and decided to take a risk and order it. Just got it today and it works perfectly. This is the only converter that is small, portable and really inexpensive. Go grab it before stocks run out. UPDATE: Strangely, using this as input to my HDTV results in better picture quality than using HDMI directly. The adapter is also intelligent enough to activate built-in speakers (so you can connect external speakers) as HDMI-VGA only uses the display part. I tried playing Angry Birds directly with HDMI and through the adapter and found that while there is a slight lag with the former, the problem disappears with the latter. To bad, this product seems to now be out of stock.

VOICE SEARCH: Install Google Voice app from freewarelovers and you can use it not only to do voice searches on the internet (pretty accurate btw), it also enables to voice input feature on your keyboard.

WEB BROWSER Install another browser that can do things the stock browser cannot. I know others are suggesting Dolphin HD, but do give SKYFIRE 3.2 a try, it works very well, gives you great pinch-to-zoom and nice toggles. It also has a button to switch between desktop and android modes and the desktop mode can be used to display HD videos (merci Rk Jay). Do also try MIREN browser (merci Boris Popov) which can do some things others vannot. The browser updates automatically on first run and adds many new functions. Firefox (Fennex) is another alternative that brings you the ability to make .pdf documents out of websites. It is a great browser but unfortunately does not support flash.

WIDGETS!! Get Android 7 Pro Windows 7 theme for Android (merci Syed Shafiuddin), you might not like 'ol Microsoft showing up on your desktop but go to options and you can add widgets like the power button that will allow you to control WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS at the click of a button. This is great for those of us who do not wish to root. The new desktop also gives you spaces upon sliding for icons and widgets. You can set the theme as your default home screen. You can find a link to the app on the next page.

Let me know if you have useful tips, I can add them to this list and we can grow this into an indexed compilation.
