Default telling me to format disk

Hi all hope someone can help me with this. I have two Kobo ereaders and I updated one on line everything went fine. When I attempted to update the firmware in the 2nd one it seemed to work okay but it didn't seem to finish. I ejected it and tried again. Now I am asked to format the drive. I really do not want to do this if I don't have to.
It is my wife's ebook and I can't remember what books I put in her ebook. Is there a simple way around this.
    Thanks for any help.

I see my post has a few "views" so here is an answer fromthe Kobo team. I will try this later but for now here is what I was told.
If your eReader fails to respond, first try recharging it and powering it off and on. If that doesn't work, you may need to reset it.

There are two kinds of resets

•A basic reset that doesn't affect the content of your eReader.
•A factory reset to your eReader's factory defaults (this removes any books on your eReader).

In most cases a basic reset will help. Don't perform a full reset unless all other troubleshooting attempts fail.

Basic reset (This will not harm any of the content on your eReader)

1.Hold down the power button for eight seconds.
    2.Let go.
3.Press the power button once more firmly.

If that doesn't work, try this:

1.Take a small paperclip and unfold it until you have an inch or so of straight wire.
    2.Turn your eReader over
3.Locate the small hole on its back, near the bottom left corner.
4.Slide the end of the straightened paperclip into the hole
5.Press gently until you feel a click.
    6.Your eReader will reset.

    Factory Reset

Note: This type of reset will erase any settings and books on your eReader. You will need to reconfigure it after the reset, and restore any books you had on it previously.

    1.Turn on your eReader.
    2.Press the Menu button.
3.Press the center of the Navigation pad.
    4.Select Settings.
5.Press the center of the Navigation pad.
    6.Select Advanced.
7.Press the center of the Navigation pad.
    8.Select Reset Device Now.
9.Press the center of the Navigation pad.
10.Once the eReader is powered up again, set the date and time.

    Sincerely,
    The Kobo Team

Resetting did not help and the "experts" have told me to do a factory reset. Not the answer I was hoping for. I do not want to have to reload the books that I changed from my old reader to the Kobo reader, I guess I should have stuck with my old reader.
