You should reinstall your kobo connecting software with computer. It can be a cause of virus so scan your system with Malware Removal for virus detection.
I guess my answer comes much too late for Michael, but this may help other people with the same problem.
My Kobo Touch only connected once. After trying a whole lot of stuff, I did a factory reset. It worked again - once (on a different USB port). Eventually I figured out it that it WILL work, but only on my POWERED USB hub.
I assume there is something wrong with it, but I live in Australia and my friend bought the Kobo for me in the US, so I don't want the trouble of sending it back there - I can live with it fine using the powered hub.
