Publishers File Lawsuit Challenging Book Bans in Idaho

Penguin Random House, alongside Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, Macmillan Publishers, Simon & Schuster, and Sourcebooks, has filed a lawsuit challenging the book removal provisions of HB 710, a law that restricts books in both public and school libraries in Idaho and was enacted into law on July 1, 2024

HB 710 forbids anyone under age 18 from accessing library books that contain “sexual content,” regardless of the work’s literary or educational merit. HB710’s definition of sexual content is comprehensive, vague, and overtly discriminatory.

The ban extends to classics such as Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five, Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and bestsellers including Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin, I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, and Forever. . . by Judy Blume. HB 710 also impacts nonfiction, imperiling access to factual resources such as “What’s Happening to My Body?” Book for Girls by Lynda Madaras, and erasing history by removing books about the Holocaust and other historical events. The law makes no distinction between infants and 17-year-olds—books are classified as harmful regardless of the age and maturity level of the child.

According to Michael Grygiel, an adjunct faculty member with Cornell Law School’s First Amendment Clinic, “HB 710 has resulted in the removal of classic works of literature from library shelves across Idaho as libraries attempt to protect themselves from liability under the law’s vague and overbroad provisions. This type of self-censorship is inimical to First Amendment liberties and has suffocated the right of Idaho students to read books deemed appropriate for their age and maturity level by their parents. In short, the law is an affront to the Constitution. It is a privilege to represent the publishers, authors, libraries, parents, and students who have joined this lawsuit to challenge HB 710 and stand up for the First Amendment rights of all Idaho citizens.”

This fluke accident resulted in Renner breaking 38 bones and having severe internal injuries, which required months of rehabilitation to heal.

First Look at the Bigme HiBreak Pro E INK Smartphone

The Bigme Hibreak Pro smartphone might be the best E INK one on the market, beating out the upcoming Minimalist Phone, Kompact, and the older Hisense ones. The main selling point is the 6.13-inch Carta 1200 display, the blistering fast Dimensity Octa-core, 2.4GHz processor.  Will you buy this phone?  It is currently on pre-order for $439.99 on the Bigme website and is expected to ship sometime this month.

The HiBreak Pro comes with a 6.13-inch E INK Carta 1200 e-paper display with a resolution of 824 x 1648 and 300 PPI. The device’s color scheme is white, and the screen is flush with the bezel and protected by a layer of glass.  Bigme said the display offers zero blue light and zero flickering, which makes it highly safe for the eyes. The front light feature offers 36-level warm and cold dual temperature controls for comfortable reading in external lighting. The Super SSS level dynamic refresh technology also removes residual images automatically.

Under the hood, the phone features a 6nm octa-core 2.4 GHz MediaTek Dimensity 1080 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256 GB of storage. It has a 20 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front shooter. The phone supports 4G/5G with dual-sim, 2.4G/5G WIFI, and Bluetooth 5.2 for wireless headphones or earbuds to listen to audiobooks, music, or podcasts. NFC  and a USB-C port are available. The phone has a single speaker on the bottom, which sounds horrible.

Keeping the device alive is a 4500 mAh battery, which should last a few weeks on a single charge. It supports 18-watt fast charging, so the battery should recharge itself quickly. The phone runs Android 14 and has full access to the Google Play Store, making it easy to download millions of apps and keep them updated.

A few buttons are on either side of the display: a fingerprint button, a volume button, a refresh button, and an E INK shortcut. These buttons can optimize the display and engage in the various speed modes.

What is the difference between the regular Hibreak that came out this year? This model has better resolution, processor, and more RAM. This sort of thing is helpful for reading and those who want to use apps regularly since Android 14 is power-hungry and performs better with better hardware.

HANNspree has the fastest paper-like display with a 75Hz refresh rate

1

The HANNspree Hybri Monitor, priced at USD 900, will be available for pre-order in Taiwan. The pre-sale will be held exclusively by the Taiwanese e-reader store Bear Boss and the national telecommunications company Chunghwa Telecom. The first deliveries are expected in late March.

Until now, paper-like displays have mostly been confined to static tasks like reading documents. A few displays have reached the crucial 60Hz refresh rate needed for smooth video playback, but Hybrid Monitor is the first to get 75Hz, enabling more dynamic multimedia use cases.

Hybrid Monitor features a 23-inch Transflective LCD (TLCD) screen (1920×1080), a unique paper-like display technology that differs significantly from the electrophoretic displays found in most e-readers. TLCD shares similarities with reflective LCD (RLCD), which is made from a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between polarizing and reflective layers. However, TLCD stands apart due to micro-perforations in its reflective coating, which allow an LED backlight to pass through it, much like a traditional LCD.

The Hybrid Monitor’s proprietary TLCD technology boasts an impressive 75Hz refresh rate and an actual 8-bit color depth of 16.7 million colors. This ensures a vibrant, Full HD experience for video watching and gaming. The monitor offers paper-like eye comfort in purely reflective mode, making it perfect for prolonged use. The reflective mode works best in environments with over 1000 lux of ambient light, while its flicker-free backlight should be activated when ambient light drops below that range.

Amazon Secures Third Spot in Fortune’s Most Admired Companies List of 2024

0

Amazon has been ranked third in the Fortune World’s Most Admired Companies list for 2025. This also makes it the 9th consecutive year that Amazon has been featured among the top three companies on the coveted list. Fortune considers several parameters – nine, specifically – and surveys the top executives and other officials before finalizing the list of contenders. Amazon attributes its achievement to continued efforts to improve and innovate its products and services, the quality of its management, and its ability to respond to social causes.

Amazon said one thing it has always been committed to, which ensured a slot among the top three in the World’s Most Admired Companies list, is its never-ending zeal to offer its customers the best products and services at the lowest possible price point. That includes things as diverse as movies, shows, podcasts, millions of other products, and even the freshest farm produce.

Amazon further stated that it made its most significant annual investment, amounting to 2.2 billion USD in pay and other employee benefits in 2024. Full-time employees who work a 40-hour week stand to gain from an average increase of $3,000. Other employee benefits include healthcare, including dental, flexible working hours, a 401(k) program with a company match, and prepaid college tuition.

Amazon also added that it has an active program that provides employees with the support they need to develop new skills and further improve their future career prospects. The company said more than 350,000 of its employees in the US have taken advantage of the free education and skills training offer since 2019. It also spends hundreds of millions of dollars to enhance the skills of its employees around the world so that they can keep up with the latest trends in the job market in both technical and non-technical fields.

Amazon’s zeal for creating a productive and flourishing work environment extends beyond the office. This has prompted the company to develop the Amazon Housing Equity Fund, which oversees the creation or practical preservation of affordable homes for its employees. Amazon has committed $3.6 billion to the fund, with $1.4 billion contributed in 2024 alone. This has led to the development of more than 35,000 affordable homes.

Other efforts Amazon believes helped it secure the top spot in the Most Admired Companies list include its continued support for the Delivery Service Partner program, which allows companies to develop their delivery networks. This, in turn, helps generate revenue and employment. Amazon has invested $12.3 billion in six years, with $2.1 billion invested last year alone.

Amazon also said it has created jobs and has the fastest delivery times, with more than 5 billion items delivered the same day or the next. The company also stated that it is always at the forefront of adopting the latest advancements in technology, including the latest AI achievements, to enhance its efficiency and make things easy and fast for its employees. All of these, Amazon believes, helped it earn the third spot as the World’s Most Admired company.

Kobo e-readers are now $10 more expensive

Kobo has raised the prices of some of its e-reader devices globally. The Kobo Clara BW, the Kobo Clara Colour, and the Kobo Libra Colour each will henceforth cost $10 more in Canada, US, UK, and other markets. This affects not only Kobo products sold on the main Kobo website but also all of their other distribution partners.

Other Kobo devices, such as the Kobo Elipsa 2E and the Kobo Sage, will continue to be sold at the same prices as before. As per the new pricing, the Kobo Clara BW will cost $139.99, while the Kobo Clara Colour will cost $159.99. Similarly, the Kobo Libra Color will cost $229.99 in the US.

At $140, the Kobo Clara BW is the most affordable Kobo e-reader available. Its performance impresses and the E Ink Carta 1300 display is excellent for reading almost any content type. The e-reader also offers a great audiobook experience. However, its plasticky build makes it look cheap. At this price point, it is only $20 less expensive than the Kindle Paperwhite and $30 more expensive than the basic Kindle.

Considering that Kindle e-readers are available on sale quite often, you can get the Kindle Paperwhite at a price lower than the Kobo Clara BW if you are watchful enough. Needless to say, the Kindle Paperwhite is a much superior e-reader compared to the Clara BW. On other days, you can always opt for the basic Kindle, which is impressive in its build, performance, and brilliant display. On any given day, the Kindle is $30 cheaper than the Clara BW, and the gap widens even further during Amazon sales.

Interestingly, the Kobo Clara BW has been out of stock for some time. Now that it is back in stock, it is much more expensive. The last Kobo price hike occurred in 2023 when it raised the prices of all its e-reader devices by $10.

Authors Guild Launches Human Authored Certification

Hundreds of thousands of e-books are submitted to anyone through self-publishing platforms such as Kindle Direct Publishing, Kobo Writing Life, Nook Press, and Smashwords. AI written books represents a large segment, polluting a good ecosystem. All of these platforms find it hard to police all of the AI garbage, since there is no editorial process. The Authors Guild is looking to counteract AI with a new certification system that lets everyone know that a real author wrote this.

Human Authored is a project of the Authors Guild that allows authors to certify that a human created their book. “Human Authored” means that the book’s text was written by a human and not generated by AI, except for minimal, trivial uses, such as AI applications that check spelling and grammar, brainstorm, or research.

The Guild’s Human Authored certification allows authors to distinguish their work in an increasingly AI-saturated market. Currently, certification is only available for Authors Guild members and for books by a single author. Human Authored certifications are listed in a public database where anyone can verify a book’s human origins.

Rebecca Yarros Onyx Storm Sold 2.7 million copies in a week

Rebecca Yarros’s ‘Onyx Storm is the fastest-selling adult novel in the past 20 years. The book, the third in a series, has sold 2.7 million copies in its first week and is topping every bestseller list. The three novels, part of Yarros’ planned five-book Empyrean series, have sold more than 12 million print, e-books, and audiobooks in the United States, according to her publisher, Entangled.

Yarros now holds the top three spots on The New York Times’s hardcover best-seller list, an incredible achievement for an adult fiction series. On Thursday, her series also claimed the top three spots on Amazon’s “most sold” fiction list.

The reviews are generally positive, but Onyx Storm has deeply confused many readers. Some of that seems unintentional; the first few chapters are packed with new characters, knotty political conflicts, and unfamiliar locations that don’t appear on the map. (Is Lewellen a person or a place? Turns out, both!) However, the ending was cryptic, as Yarros loves a shocking cliffhanger. “I already know what it is before I start the book and drive for it with glee,” she told Good Morning America.

It’s wild. I’m humbled by it. It’s wild. I don’t think it’s registered,” Yarros told Variety in the middle of her whirlwind tour of sold-out Q&As and morning-show appearances to promote the book, “I’ll probably burst into tears at home when I’m in real life with my children and husband. But right now, it’s like two different segments of my life.”

Onyx Storm (The Empyrean Book 3)
After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty. Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.
