Onyx Boox Increases Price of Several e-Reader and e-Note Devices

Onyx Boox Palma 2

Onyx Boox seems to have increased the prices of several of their e-reader and e-note devices. As the e-Book Reader Blog mentioned, the price of the Note Air 4C has gone up by $20. Similarly, the Palma 2 (Black), Boox Go 6, and Boox Go Color 7 are now dearer by $10. Interestingly, the Palma 2 White is still showing its original price though it could be just a matter of time before its price too sees an upward revision. Among the other devices that continue to be available at the same price include the Boox Go 10.3 and the 13.3-inch Note Max.

The price rise can only be seen at B&H, while the official Boox store at Amazon continues to list all Boox devices at the original prices. That said, prices could go up at any time. If you have been eyeing any of the Boox devices lately, it is better you complete the purchase as soon as possible or else be prepared to shell out extra money for the same devices.

The company hasn't revealed what led them to increase the cost of its devices. As it is, Boox devices already are quite expensive compared to the competition, and the latest price hike is going to make things all the more tricky for them. The Chinese company can't help much either considering that, unlike Amazon or Kobo, it does not make money selling e-books or other content and services. This should explain the relatively higher prices of Boox devices.

Then again, with the likes of Amazon or Kobo, you are closely tied to their respective ecosystems. There is none of that with Onyx Boox as you always have the liberty to install the app you want and subscribe to the services you prefer. With Boox devices, you aren't tied to any ecosystem as such since they are based on the Android open system.

Meanwhile, Kobo too had increased the prices of its e-reader devices by $10 just weeks back. This makes us wonder if Amazon could be next in line to follow suit, or if it will use the situation to position itself as the seller of an affordable range of Kindle e-reader devices. In any case, Kindle devices are on sale quite often. Stay tuned!
