The Apple iPad juggernaut not only is on in full swing, but seems to be gaining in strength with each passing day. It should be of little surprise if it’s Q3 sales of the iPad are showing a significant development over any of its previous quarters. In pure number terms, the growth is marked by the sale of a record 9.25 million iPads in the third quarter, which represents a whooping jump of 183 percent over the same period a year ago. This comes to about 1.2 iPad sold every second during each day for the last three months.
“We’re thrilled to deliver our best quarter ever, with revenue up 82 percent and profits up 125 percent,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Right now, we’re very focused and excited about bringing iOS 5 and iCloud to our users this fall.”
Apple’s CFO, Mr. Peter Oppenheimer is naturally ecstatic about the developments. He said, “We are extremely pleased with our performance which drove quarterly cash flow from operations of $11.1 billion, an increase of 131 percent year-over-year.”
Apple recently announced having thoroughly revamped production so as to meet the ever growing demand for its iPad tablets. The waiting period has come down to an extremely convenient 24 to 72 hours while the company claims it has 1.05 million iPads in its sales inventory. This however is well below their target of having ready stock of at least 4 to 6 weeks of iPad demands. In fact, so brisk has been the demand for the iPad 2 that it has even started to surge ahead of PC sales while it even cannibalized some of Apple’s own products.
What has also come as a surprise is the rate at which the iPads has seen adoption in the enterprise segment. An astounding 90 percent of Fortune 500 and 47 percent of the Global 500 companies are either in the process of testing an iOS based device such as the iPhone or the iPad are already deploying them. Some of the major clients include GE, Boston Scientific, Cedar Sinai Hospital, Standard Charter and Salesforce while Alaska Airlines and American Airlines already use the iPads in their cockpit.
Also if there is any one company to feel the heat the most of a better than expected iPad sales report in North America then it surely is RIM. Not only has RIM ceded a lot of ground in the smartphones segment to the iPhone but its PlayBook tablet too is left languishing as most other tablet PCs. As a direct fallout, PlayBook production has been cut to almost half of the 500,000 units that found buyers in spring.

The Company posted record quarterly revenue of $28.57 billion and record quarterly net profit of $7.31 billion, or $7.79 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $15.70 billion and net quarterly profit of $3.25 billion, or $3.51 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 41.7 percent compared to 39.1 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 62 percent of the quarter’s revenue.
The Company sold 20.34 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 142 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 9.25 million iPads during the quarter, a 183 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 3.95 million Macs during the quarter, a 14 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 7.54 million iPods, a 20 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.
