The Onyx Boox Palma is definitely the device to go for if you are looking for an e-book reader device in a more compact smartphone form factor. It boasts an impeccable build while the 300 PPI display makes things look as sharp and crisp as it can be. It is extremely fast and the page refresh times are swift enough to not hamper your reading experience adversely. It also offers a rear-mounted camera with a flash and supports OCR functionality. It can be great for reading e-books or manga but not for large format documents such as PDF files.
Even though it is extremely handy and pocketable, it isn’t exactly pocket friendly, so to speak. At $280, you might want to look at something more affordable. That is where the Moaan InkPalm Plus comes into the picture. At, $125, it will have a low intensity pinch on your pocket though here again, that won’t be without agreeing to a few compromises in the process.
For instance, the InkPalm Plus makes do with only 2 gigs of memory and offers 64 GB of native storage. That is half the storage and one-third the memory that you get on the Palma. The 2240 mAh battery on the InkPalm Plus is also considerably less than the 3950 mAh battery that you get on the Boox device. The 5.84-inch 276PPI E Ink display on the InkPalm Plus is also a slight downgrade compared to the 300 PPI display of the Palma though that’s largely on paper and shouldn’t matter much in real life.
Another con with the InkPalm Plus is its Android 11 OS, which as The Verge pointed out, is not fully translated from Chinese to English. The InkPalm Plus also lacks a camera and the mic as well that you have on the Palma.
In the end, the choice is going to be yours. If you can live with the above shortcomings compared to the Palma, the InkPalm Plus can be a great e-reader device, more so when it costs less than half of the Boox offering.
With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. The motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot, and I'll likely make a film sometime in the future.
