Mozilla Pocket has been available on Kobo e-readers for over ten years. This is a read-it-later service that allows web articles to be sent to a Kobo e-reader for reading on the device. The web articles are converted into an e-reader-friendly format, making them look just like an e-book. Sadly, Pocket is leaving all Kobo e-readers this July, as the service is shutting down and being discontinued.
Pocket said in a statement to Good e-Reader, “We’ve made the difficult decision to shut down Pocket on July 8, 2025. Thank you for being part of our journey over the years—we’re proud of the impact Pocket has had for our users and communities. ”
The Pocket web extensions will no longer be available to install from May 22, 2025. As of this date, anyone attempting to use the Pocket extensions will be redirected to the Pocket export page. All extensions will be removed from the extension stores, including Chrome and Firefox. When July 8th rolls around, none of the browser extensions will work anymore and will have to be manually deleted.
This is a significant setback for Kobo e-reader owners. Pocket was an important selling point for buying a Kobo and investing in their ecosystem. Kobo has not officially announced the discontinuation of Pocket to its users yet, as this news was just released today. You can expect them to make a help file, letting people know sometime in the next couple of weeks. A firmware update will also be issued soon to remove all Pocket functionality.
