2023’s Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) battle of the best books, “Canada Reads” has just wrapped up, and for the first time a graphic narrative has been crowned the winner. Ducks a graphic memoir about a young woman working in Alberta’s oil sands, written by Kate Beaton, was championed by Jeopardy super-star Mattea Roach.
The annual national book battle began over 20 years ago, and each year a handful of top books are chosen to enter the ring. The weeklong event is dedicated to sharing, uplifting and highlighting Canadian literature. The debate is championed by celebrities and prominent Canadians. Past debaters have included a mix of prominent figures including, Steven Page, front man of Barenaked Ladies, actor Alan Thicke, and even Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took a turn in the seat back in 2003.
The week long debate is aired on CBC radio and TV in order to determine which title will be crowned the winner. The well-prepared panelists graciously fight hard for their chosen books, and often the conversation gets intense and emotional as the panelists are quite invested in their esteemed books.
In 2017’s debate, Candy Palmater responded passionately after listening to criticism from other panelists that men were portrayed negatively in her book, The Break by Katherena Vermette. As reported by CBC, Palmater respond to the point by saying, “As I travelled around the country, so many Indigenous people have told me ‘this is my life,'” said Palmater. “A few years ago when the RCMP said most of the violence against Indigenous women is perpetrated by Indigenous men, the rest of Canada said, ‘Oh. OK. Then we don’t have to worry about that anymore now. That’s their own problem.’ I feel like what [Katherena Vermette] was trying to do was show… how colonization has affected both our males and our females and their relationship within our communities.”
Just like previous years, this year’s debate was smart, emotional, and thought provoking. All of which is on-point with the 2023’s theme; “To find the one book all Canadians should read to help to help shift their perspectives.”
“Ducks”, By Kate Beaton (Winner)

“Greenwood”, By Michael Christie (Finalist)

“Hotline”, By Dimitri Nasrallah (Finalist)
A vivid love letter to the 1980s and one woman’s struggle to overcome the challenges of immigration.
