ASME – The American Society of Magazine Editors recently announced winners of the 2023 National Magazine Awards. The event took place at Terminal 5, New York City. This 58th annual award ceremony recognized various media organizations for their editorial achievements. The awards were presented for categories ranging from video and podcasting to feature writing and reporting.
The American Society of Magazine Editors sponsored this event with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. The previously disclosed winners and finalists of the ASME Awards for Design, Illustration, and Photography, the ASME Award for Fiction, and the ASME NEXT Awards for Journalism Under 30 were also recognized for their contributions.
Women’s health and family issues were the prime theme of the award-winning stories this year. Among the distinguished pieces was Jia Tolentino’s “A Post-Roe Threat,” “The Post-Roe Era,” and “Is Abortion Sacred?” for The New Yorker.
Moreover, Natasha Pearlman’s “The Time to Pass Paid Leave Is Now” was for Glamour. Romper’s “Best C-Section Ever,” including “What No One Tells You About C-Sections” and “Your Complete Guide To Recovering From A C-Section,” edited by Melissa Dahl and Meaghan O’Connell.
The New York and New York Times Magazines both won multiple awards. Condé Nast topped the list of group publishers. Four publications received the most coveted award, General Excellence. The Atlantic, The Marshall Project, and two first-time winners, Cook’s Illustrated and Grist, were among the winners.
Other notable winners of the New York Times Magazines include, “The Year of the Nepo Baby” and “The Battle for Baby L.” by Rozina Ali. Jazmine Huges was the winner of the ASME NEXT Award in 2020. She was the author of award-winning stories in Profile Writing for the New York Times Magazine. “Ms. Big Mouth” and “Viola Davis, Inside Out” are her award-winning pieces.
This year, New York and The New York Times Magazine each won numerous awards. The New York won for Single-Topic Issue and Lifestyle Journalism. Moreover, The New York Times Magazine won for Reporting and Profile Writing. With three wins for Glamour (Public Interest), GQ (Design), and The New Yorker (Columns & Essays), Condé Nast became the top group publisher.
That’s not all. Four publications received the General Excellence award this year, which is the highest accolade. The Atlantic, The Marshall Project, Cook’s Illustrated, and Grist. Each of these won accolades for the first time. Other first-time winners in those categories included Romper (Service Journalism), The New York Review of Books (Reviews & Criticism), and Gimlet (Podcasting).
