E Ink announced it has achieved a significant technology breakthrough with the E Ink Spectra display, which will help reduce flicker and add more color to e-paper displays, the website Udn reported. The company said using a wave-like gradient ripple reduced the flickering effect considerably. Further, new colors have been added by adjusting the color through the new waveform even though it uses the same colors as the color e-paper display.

E Ink said the integrated chip in the system has also been upgraded to 3 bits. This and the second-generation Waveform architecture have led to an expanded color rendering system, which now comprises 8 primary colors. Needless to say, this will lead to a more appealing visual effect when showing color content.

“E Ink continues to improve its e-paper technology to enhance color performance. Based on customer feedback, we have introduced the newly developed Waveform to provide advertisers with an accurate display of standard colors required by advertisers. It can quickly focus and meet customer needs, further increasing the penetration rate of e-paper applications in the advertising field,” said E Ink Chairman Li Zhenghao.

With the new Waveform architecture, the E Ink Spectra 3100 Plus display can show two new colors—dark gray and light gray. This will be in addition to the five colors—black, white, red, yellow, and orange—that it has already been able to show. While red, orange, and yellow highlight content in advertisements, the two new grayscale colors, white and black, will lead to more natural text characters with fewer jagged edges shown on e-paper displays.

E Ink said its ecosystem partners, Tianyu Technology, Solomon Technology, Himax, Novatek Technology, United Polycrystalline Silicon, and Jinghong Semiconductor, have all begun to supply chips running the new Waveform. The e-paper manufacturer also stated that the color rendering system could be expanded to include cyan, light green, and orange combined with an independent timing control chip T2000.

The new Waveform architecture and e-paper technology with better color display will be showcased at Touch Taiwan 2025, scheduled from April 16 to 18, 2025.

With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. The motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot, and I'll likely make a film sometime in the future.
