Rīgas Satiksme announced it is in the process of installing more Papercast e-paper display-based public signs at Riga’s Public transport facilities. This is aimed at enhancing the travel experience by providing travelers with all the information they might need in the most intuitive manner. This marks the second phase of installing the Papercast e-paper signage solution, which is being attempted after the positive feedback received in the first round.
Rīgas Satiksme stated they have opted for Papercast’s 23-inch e-paper displays after having evaluated all available options. Apart from having excellent visibility and wide viewing angles, the other inherent positive of e-paper displays is that they consume very little power. In fact, the Papercast displays being used by Rīgas Satiksme are designed to recharge overnight using the light provided by street lights. This ensures excellent energy savings without compromising on functionality compared to traditional LCD or LED displays.
Here are some facts and figures to give you an idea of how power-efficient the E Ink-based Papercast displays. For instance, while it takes 1,080 Wh for LED displays to operating per day, the same for Papercast displays is just 15 Wh per day. This translates to energy saving to the tune of 98.6 percent. In terms of costs, it takes €1,080 for LED panels to operate in a year compared to just €1.53 for e-paper displays annually.
Apart from the huge energy savings which leads to a direct saving in its operating costs, e-paper displays are a lot more environment friendly as well. As per an estimate provided, Papercast displays emit only 1 kilo of carbon in a year compared to 82 kilos of carbon that LED displays emit annually. This marks a 98.8 percent reduction of fresh carbon deposition in the environment every year with the use of the Papercast e-paper displays.
Apart from excellent energy savings, visibility too is of a very high order given its paper-like glare-free visuals. Travelers get to have the most updated info in real-time. Among the other positives of the Papercast e-paper displays include a simple user interface as well as customizable features. Installation is easy and can be easily integrated with the existing fleet management system.
“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Rīgas Satiksme in their mission to embrace cutting-edge, sustainable passenger information solutions,” said Cameron Maconie, Head of Business Development at Papercast. “The selection of Papercast displays for the second phase rollout underscores the unmatched benefits of our market leading technology, making it the ideal choice for modernising public transport infrastructure.”
With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. The motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot, and I'll likely make a film sometime in the future.
