Sony Responds to the 10 Page Note Taking Limit on DPTS1

A few days ago Good e-Reader broke the news that there was a 10 page note taking limit on the Sony Digital Paper DPTS1 e-reader. This prevents people from making a note from scratch and going beyond 10 pages. Today, Sony has responded  to this limitation with a promise that a future firmware update will remedy it and also provided us with a 25 page PDF document, that can be used to bypass the limitation.

“Sony is highly aware of the 10 page limitation and we already have plans to address this limitation in a forthcoming release of firmware which will be available toward the end of the year.  Users will no longer be limited to 10 pages of notes.  The improvement will be available to everyone via Over The Air update (or by connecting Digital Paper via USB to the computer).” said a Sony rep.

Ray Zwiefelhofer and his team at Worlddox has done some experimentation and they have developed some fun forms and other features from which Sony Digital Paper users might enjoy http://www.worldox.com/products/sony_digital_paper_tools and if you are looking for a 25 page PDF that can be used to take bigger notes, you can download it from HERE.

Is Sony aware of the Bluetooth limitation? Do they have plan to address this limitation in a forthcoming release of hardware update?

How the musicians are suppose to turn pages hands-free on $1100 device?

Dear Sony, lower the price and sell this lovely e-reader all over the world. I am from Europe and would love to own it. You are behaving as if you don´t want to sell this product. Strange.

  • J. Jansen

I quite agree. I am also living in Europe and would be willing to buy this device (as I have indicated before).

I cannot understand that Sony, who is losing money everywhere, will not take this opportunity to milk this niche product for all that it is worth.

They have no competitors in this niche (for now).
But that might change if other e-reader companies discover that there is a market for this type of device, and bring out a cheaper model worldwide (maybe the PocketBook CAD-Reader ? ).
Then they will most definitely lose this race.

And let’s be honest, Sony has (unknowingly) proven that there is a niche-market for such a device.

Don’t blame Sony. It’s Eink Corp who’s the only display maker which can’t (or doesn’t want to) produce more of them. Unfortunately there’s no competition.
    Welcome to 21st century!

Well actually, the e-ink paper on the Sony Digital Paper was done in conjunction with e-ink. So basically Sony and e-ink did RND together, Sony got the Mobius screen at a tremendous discount and got a certain number of months exclusive on the market. This prevented anyone else from using the screens until about 2 months ago. Now, Pocketbook is going to use it on the upcoming CAD Reader in 2015.

  • otnte

Yes you’re right. I forgot about period of exclusivity.
But it doesn’t change “triste” situation there’s really only one producer of the digital paper.
Their own website reads they have 90% of market share:
    http://www.einkgroup.com/about_us.php?recordId=150
Chinese company Prime View International aka E Ink Holdings did buy most of the competition: ePaper business from Philips, Hydis, original E Ink, SiPix.

Amazon who bought Liquavista is using E Ink displays…

E Ink can’t produce enough of 13inch displays or doesn’t care.
Anyway I’d love to buy Mobius display and make my own reader with this:

There is other e-paper on the market by Pixel Qi and Plastic Logic, but they have a VERY hardtime convincing anyone to license their tech.

  • otnte

Yes let’s make a RIP list: Pixel Qi, Plastic Logic, Bridgestone QR-LPD, Amazon’s Liquavista, NTera to start with.

  • jon

Why not integrate e-book functionality, if not in the form of an Amazon-like store, at least with epub support? Why doesn’t it read txt and doc files, and why not read jpgs? Only pdfs? This device has too little to offer for such a staggering price.
