American teachers who belong to the organization Teach for America have received over 9,000 iPads to be used in the classroom. The organization is focused on prompting people who upgrade to the iPad 2 to donate their first generation tablet to be used in low income schools.
Former CEO Steve Job’s wife Laurene Powell sits on the board of directors of Teach for America. The program runs in 38 states in the USA and ran a program until the end of August that invited schools to apply to receive a free iPad.
Katie Remington is a teacher and picked up her her new iPad—a refurbished model that looked like new—on Sunday and brought it to the inner-city high school in St. Louis where she runs the science department. “So far,” she wrote after the first day, “I’ve figured out it can make them finish their work fast for ‘iPad time.'” Katie is one of the more vocal teachers who recently wrote expressing how happy she was with the program.
