Amazon has been operating in India for three years and the company has finally unveiled their Prime loyalty program. It will offer free two day shipping with no limit on order size.
Amazon has been investing billions of dollars in India, one of the worlds most populous countries. Their Kindle e-book store has been a staggering success and resulted in their arch-nemesis Flipkart in abandoning their own digital bookstore.
Prime membership will cost 499 Indian rupees ($7.41) per year, rivaling Flipkart’s own offering Flipkart First, which is priced at 500 Indian rupees per year.
Prime is a key driver of sales and customer loyalty for Amazon. In the United States, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners in Chicago estimated the service has 63 million. Prime members spend on average $1,200 per year, compared with $500 per year for non-members.
