The CEO of Intel Brian Krzanich spoke at an investors meeting and said “There’s not a reason you have to go to a tablet device. The tablet business is just not a growth business – it’s a declining business.”
Intel’s been shipping less chips for tablets lately. Last year, Intel said it hit 40 million tablets, but this year, it’s expecting somewhere around 30 million.
Not only are less Intel tablets being shipped out but ones that use ARM processors are also on the decline. Gartner, IDC and Canalys have all proclaimed that tablet sales have been slowing down.
The big catalyst of dedicated tablet sales slipping have been the rise of convertible 2 in one devices. This has been quite evident in the blitz promotional campaign that Microsoft has been running with the new Surface 4 and the Google Pixel C. Apple has also entered this arena, albeit with an ARM processor in the 12 inch iPad Pro.
