In more dark news for the publishing industry, media mainstay GalleyCat has announced that it will be closing its doors. The site, one of several under the umbrella of AdWeek, covered publishing industry news and offered reviews of upcoming books.

According to a blog post signed by both Dianna Dilworth and Maryann Yin, “We thank you for your support and readership over the years. Over the past decade, it’s been our mission to keep you informed with news from publishers, authors, booksellers and libraries. We’ve had the pleasure of reading thousands of fantastic books and reviewing many of them along the way. It has been an honor to know so many of the people in this community from authors and book editors to literary agents and book store owners, and the associations supporting every corner of the business.”

GalleyCat is not the first major name in the publishing industry to close its doors in recent weeks. IndieReader announced last week that it would discontinue its reader-centric side of the operation, which included an industry news blog and a book review site, to focus its efforts on the author services side of the industry.

While some of the companies that had a long-running hand in helping further the ebook industry and the self-publishing revolution are leaving us, new companies like HonestFew are trying to step in and keep book discovery at the forefront of readers’ minds. The new site lets readers support the authors they work with through seamless book purchasing or lets them receive a free copy of the promoted books by sharing news of the books on their social media feeds.
