Onyx has released a new e-book reader device, WeRead, which was designed in collaboration with the Chinese social media and messaging app WeChat. The latest e-reader is closely tied to WeChat and will be sold exclusively via the WeChat Reading Store. According to current conversion rates, it is priced at 999 Chinese Yuan, which is around 138 USD.
Needless to say, the e-reader will only be able to connect to the WeChat Reading App. Your reading progress with the WeChat Reading account will be synced across devices. This way, you can read on one device and then continue on another right from where you had left off on the first device. Since the e-reader only connects with WeRead, the e-reader will be suitable for existing or aspiring WeChat members and no one else. Also, it is going to be sold only within China.
According to its specs, WeRead has a 6-inch E Ink Carta 1300 e-paper display with a 1448 x 1072 pixels resolution and a 300 DPI pixel density. It also has a Qualcomm 2.0 GHz octa-core processor, 2 gigs of memory, and 32 GB of storage. The device measures 148 × 108 × 6.8 mm and weighs only 145 grams. It comes pre-installed with Android 11 out of the box, but unlike other Onyx devices, it cannot access the Google Play Store.
This makes WeChat Reading a modest e-reader designed exclusively for WeChat members. The specs are pretty decent for an entry-level device, which applies equally to the price. It should appeal to even those who have never read an e-book and are looking for an affordable way to enter the realm of digital reading.
With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. The motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot, and I'll likely make a film sometime in the future.
