Onyx Boox Max 13.3 Inch e-Reader is Available for Pre-Order

There is very limited competition in the 13.3 inch e-reader sector, with the aging Sony Digital Paper as the only commercially available product. Onyx has been teasing a 13.3 inch device for a number of years and it looks like they are close to an official release. The company has announced that pre-orders are now available for 585 Euros + VAT. This means that to your door, including shipping you will be paying over 700 Euros.

The Onyx Boox Max runs Android 4.0 on a dual-core 1GHz CPU. It features a 13.3″ plastic-backed E-ink screen (1600 x 1200 resolution), and it has a pressure-sensitive touchscreen and stylus. You can connect up to the internet via WIFI and it has 8 GB of internal storage for all of your content.  You can read PDF and e-PUB books out of the box but you basically need to install your own apps in order to get great functionality.

It has 16 GB build in, not 8GB.

I think Sony’s product has more refined features… however limited they may be. I hope this product pushes Sony to release a Gen 2 device, instead of simply dropping the product line altogether. I’d take the Sony right now, except for the fact that it can ONLY read PDF files. So sad.

The screen resolution will change when new 13.3 e-ink screens are produced in enough numbers : 1600×1200 for first devices on the market (same screen as in Sony’s model), then updated devices with 2200 x 1650 screen.
