Onyx Boox has launched the Leaf 5 series e-reader, which comprises the Leaf 5 and the Leaf 5C devices. Though there is not much known about the Leaf 5C at the moment, it would perhaps be safe to assume the Leaf 5C is going to be the color version of the Leaf 5. Boox followed a similar pattern to the Leaf 3 series earlier, where the Leaf 3C accompanied the monochrome Leaf 3 model. Further, the Leaf 5C, much like the Leaf 3C, is also expected to feature a Kaleido 3 display and will be accompanied by a stylus pen.
Meanwhile, here is all that we know about the Leaf 5 right now. It will come with a 7-inch Carta 1300 black and white E Ink display having 1680 x 1264 resolution and 300 PPI pixel density. The display benefits from the company’s proprietary afterimage self-clearing 2.0 technology, which ensures quick and efficient removal of the remnants of past displays.
Boox also stated that the Leaf 5 comes with enhanced front lights, the light spread has improved, with Boox claiming a 13 percent improvement in front light uniformity. The e-reader also supports moonlight mode, which allows for an excellent viewing experience in all lighting conditions.
Other specs include a 2.0GHz Qualcomm octa-core processor, 4 GB of memory, and 64 GB of storage, the latter being expandable to a max of 2 TB via microSD cards. Keeping the device alive is a 2000 mAh battery, which should last several weeks at least before requiring a top-up. Other features include dual-band, highly sensitive microphones, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.0. It runs Android 13 and allows the installation of third-party apps.
The basic design remains the same, which happens to be a clone of the Kindle Oasis. There is the same asymmetric build with a thicker edge on the right, which also hosts the physical page-turn buttons. The e-reader measures 8.5mm in thickness but tapers down to just 4mm at its thinnest point. At 175 grams, the e-reader is also easily among the lightest around.
The Leaf 5 and Leaf5c is only available in China. The Leaf 5 starts at 1,599 yuan (217 USD) and can be ordered via JingDong. This applies to the model sporting the Forest Green color scheme. There is also the Moon Frost color version, which is priced at 1,649 yuan (224 USD). There is going to be another color option – vitality gold, which will be available around mid-May and will be priced the same at 1,649 yuan (224 USD).
The Leaf 5C, on the other hand, starts at 1,799 yuan (244 USD) and will come in a shade of Forest Green. Leaf 5C will also come in a vitality gold color option, which is going to be priced at 1,999 yuan (271 USD). Boox is also offering a magnetic cover, which is priced at an additional 129 yuan (17 USD).
With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. The motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot, and I'll likely make a film sometime in the future.
