ICD have announced the making of their Gemini Tablet and going by specifications declared by them, this is going to be the real tablet PC of the year. Other gadgets will perhaps be reduced to mere mobile internet devices if the Gemini makes it to the market.
Based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 1GHZ processor along with 512 MB of DDR RAM, the Gemini is turning out to be one feature rich device. It has an expandable SD Card slot, a micro USB port and a forward facing webcam with a resolution of 2 MP. Then there’s also a back facing camera with an even better resolution of 5 MP. There is plenty more, like ambient light sensor, USB ports, accelerometer, magnetometer and a dockable charging feature. It is also slated to have GPS and a replaceable 40 Wh battery. And if that’s not all, there’s even a FM radio.
The Gemini will have a multi-touch screen measuring 11.2 inches and with a resolution of 1366 X 768, which works out to an impressive 720p HD. Running on the Android OS, Gemini also has additional 4GB as flash storage giving an astounding 1080p video support.
Gemini is equally impressive as far as its connectivity features are concerned. Like it’s going to be Wi-Fi b/g/n enabled and that too with n support. Bluetooth 2.1, GPS and Infrared are the other additional communication features this tablet PC would have. Gemini also has built-in 3G support along with the ability to make cellular calls. In fact, Gemini can also be used as a remote control as well.
The down side of this gadget to come is that a half GB of RAM is considered too paltry. The same can be said of the 4GB of storage space that Gemini is going to come with, which means you can only load half the movie from a Blu Ray disc, which is rather a shame for a device that can render a crisp 1080p display and should have at least 16GB of storage on the base model. A SD card slot expandable up to 32GB however, does make up things a bit.
The good thing though is that ICD is raising the bar. It will be a good thing if they have learned the tricks from their previous ventures with the Vega and the Ultra Tablets before they come out with their latest device.
There is uncertainty over dates when the release would actually occur though rumor has it that it might begin appearing in showrooms from August this year. Also, being so feature rich the cost of the gadget maybe frightfully high, which will put it out of range of the masses. But then again, there is rumor that the Gemini will be priced in the $500 – $600 range. The price is expected to lower further given the talk of ICD subsidizing the Gemini through deals with mobile companies, something they are up to with their Vega Tablets. ICD is also keen to include a cell phone plan, which will lead to further reduction in price since Gemini can also be used to make calls.
As per the latest that we have, the demo Gemini’s have been found to be lightening fast in operation while the size and quality of display is top notch. However, bugs still remain while it also is facing glitches with the Android OS. So there’s still some work to be done for ICD.

With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. The motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot, and I'll likely make a film sometime in the future.
