A tablet device from Nokia might finally become a reality after being shrouded in rumors for several years now. The Finnish company is sending out press invites for an event scheduled on the first day of the Mobile World Congress. This does whet our appetite for a tablet device from Nokia, coming as it does after a recent statement from the company chief executive Stephen Elop who said they are looking at the tablet space very closely.
“We haven’t announced tablets at this point, but it is something we are clearly looking at very closely. We are studying very closely the market right now as Microsoft has introduced the Surface tablet, so we are trying to learn from that and understand what the right way to participate would be and at what point in time,” said Elop.
However, with just that much revealed, there lies a lot of space for the rumor mongers to give vent to their creativity. For instance, it’s not known for sure if Nokia will have a contender in the 7 inch or 10 inch segment. How, it seems pretty much sure with the choice of operating system that Nokia will eventually side with given their growing bonhomie with Microsoft. However, if that be the case, a 10 inch tablet running Windows 8 seems more likely rather than a 7 incher.
“We would consider any option [Android or Windows] … It is important to note that the opportunity for companionship is something that any user is looking for. So, when you think about the Lumia 920, running on Windows phone, having a Windows tablet or PC or Xbox is something that will give us the opportunity to have a pretty integrated experience. Our first focus on what we look at is clearly in the Microsoft side,” said Mr Elop before also adding, “But we have made no decision or announced nothing.”
The last time Nokia has been linked to a tablet device was when Digitimes reported it has initiated discussion with Taiwan based manufacturers such as Qualcomm and Compal Electronics to put together the tablet. There were also talk of the tablet to come with two batteries, one standard while another fitted in the keyboard.
More on this from the MWC which runs from Feb 23 – 28 in Fila Gran Via, Spain.
With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. The motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot, and I'll likely make a film sometime in the future.
