Here comes the newest entrant to the e-paper tablet segment – the Paper 7, TechBang reported. Developed by the Hong Kong-based Harbor Innovations in partnership with Hannspree, Paper 7 features a 7.8-inch 768 x 1024 pixels reflective RLCD panel with no backlight present. This ensures the display is soft on the eyes as there is none of the glare associated with LCD panels that are backlit and are hence inherently non-reflective.

With the backlight module eliminated, the RLCD panel is dependent entirely on the ambient light for illuminating the screen. This is achieved by reflecting the ambient light with the help of a reflective layer. This ensures the liquid crystal layer can modulate the amount of light that gets reflected back to the user.

This not only ensures a soothing viewing experience for the user but also improves readability, even under bright sunlit conditions. RLCD panel also consumes less power than its LCD counterpart while producing less heat in the process. Another positive of the RLCD panel is its 60 Hz refresh rate, apart from its support for 16.77 million colors. That said, color vividness gets reduced significantly.

All of this makes RLCD a viable alternative to E Ink e-paper displays that lack colors and suffer from a low refresh rate. The Paper 7 otherwise comes with an octa-core MediaTek Helio P75 SoC and an Arm Mail-G52 MC2 GPU. There is 8 GB of memory and 256 GB of eMMC storage onboard. It supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity besides also featuring a USB Type-C port.

The accompanying stylus offers 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity and can be used for writing or drawing. It comes with front and rear-facing cameras and measures just 5.5mm in profile. At 242 grams, it is quite handy too. The 3100mAh battery should allow for several days of usage comfortably.

The Paper 7 runs Android 14, which means you will have all the advantages of an Android device. That includes numerous applications for almost any need that you can think of. The Paper 7 tablet is slated for launch in May 2025 and will set you back US$299.

With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. The motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot, and I'll likely make a film sometime in the future.
