The hack takes advantage of a key vulnerability of Kindle devices and will be equally applicable to even the latest generation 2024 Kindle models. WinterBreak, as the tool is named, has worked on every Kindle device available since 2012 and runs the firmware version 5.18.0.1.0.1 or earlier.
Using the hack is as easy as it can get. All you need to do is invoke Airplane mode on your Kindle and connect it to your PC. The Kindle should appear as a storage device on your computer. Thereafter, you will have to extract a file that has been downloaded from KindleModding to your Kindle device. Once you are through this, reboot your Kindle and follow some simple instructions. You should now have unrestricted access to the Kindle hardware and be able to do whatever you like. The only problem here is that you must follow the same rituals every time you reboot your Kindle, though you can also install a hotfix that prevents you from repeating the steps.
Among the reasons you will want to jailbreak your Kindle is the ability to do things that would otherwise be impossible in its original state. As it is, the Kindle e-readers are tightly integrated with the Amazon ecosystem. However, once jailbroken, you can install any e-reader app you want, including those that let you read ePub, PDF, manga, or other file formats. You might also want to install audiobook players or simple gaming apps. The possibilities can be limitless.
Among the other benefits of jailbreaking your Kindle include removing any ads if you are using an ad-supported Kindle version. You can also use custom screensavers on your Kindle, which is not straightforward with the current Kindle device. Amazon offers a set of images that get selected as screensavers on their own.
The only downside is that you must forego any warranty or other support from Amazon. This applies if your device gets bricked, which is possible if you fail to follow the hacking instructions correctly. Also, forget about any future OTA updates from Amazon, as you will have to keep them off even if you wish to keep your Kindle in its hacked state.
