Dasung is quickly becoming a popular brand for people who need an e-paper display and want to hook it up via HDMI to their laptop or PC. The monitor doesn’t emit a harsh backlight that can lead to eye issues, headaches, and insomnia. With the Dasung e-ink monitor, your eyes will be protected while writing code or browsing the internet. It can be a replacement for computer glasses that ease eye strain.
The Dasung Pearl came out last year and we reviewed it on Good e-Reader. It is a big upgrade from the original Dasung monitor that came up in 2016, the one we reviewed suffered from slow a slow refresh rate due to the limitations of Pearl. The Dasung Paperlike Pro with Carta has just been released and although it costs a bit more, it is a superior device.
The PaperLike Pro with Carta features a 13.3 inch e-Ink display with a resolution of 1600×1200 and the PPI is around 250. It doesn’t have any internal memory and does not act as an e-reader on its own, instead it is designed purely as a secondary screen for your PC or laptop. It has four different buttons on the front of the screen, one is for the power and the others are to tweak the screen settings for particular circumstances. Dasung is calling it FLOYD, which is a hybrid A2 mode. One is great for reading or browsing the web and the other was designed for quickly scrolling around websites with lots of images or watching videos.
There are two versions of the Dasung Paperlike PRO available, one has E-Ink Pearl and the new model has Carta. E-Ink Pearl originally came out in 2010 and is fairly dated by 2018 standards. It does not have compatibility with E-Ink Regal, which is a waveform controller. There are hardly any e-readers on the market that employ this technology, everyone has embraced Carta.
E-Ink Carta displays utilizes a new electronic ink formulation and technology to provide a dramatic 50% improvement in contrast ratio and over 20% improvement in reflectance over previous generations of E Ink displays for a remarkably improved viewing and reading experience. Carta displays utilize the most advanced bistable electronic paper technology to deliver the best contrast ratio. E-Ink Carta supports Regal technology for page updates. Regal virtually eliminates the need for a full page refresh giving the reader smoother page transitions for more focused reading. All modern e-readers such as the Kindle Oasis, Kobo Aura One, Sony Digital Paper DPT-RP1 and the Nook 3 all run Carta.
