The Remarkable writing slate came out in 2017 and there were very few 10.3 inch digital note taking devices on the market. In the past few years we have seen many new players enter the market and 10.3 is the norm. There is the Sony DPT-CP1, SuperNote A5, Likebook Mimas & Alita and the Onyx Boox Note Pro, among others. Will Remarkable release a new device in 2020?
Remarkable has deep pockets, they generated millions of dollars in revenue from their pre-order phase and sold 50,000 units in the past few years. They developed their own branch of Linux, which they call Canvas and the device is speedy and robust. It is one of the few products on the market that natively support anointing and editing EPUB/PDF files out of the box. Their drawing experience is also best in class, they support handwriting to text recognition and have many photoshop elements for drawing, such as layers.
The Remarkable has spawned many accessories. They have their default case, a high-end folio case and a new Marker Signature Pen, which has a hefty weight and is made of Anodized aluminum, it feels very premium.
Will a second generation Remarkable come out 2020? It will either come out next year or the year after. I have heard that the company wants to employ the new E Ink Color e-paper and this will take drawing to a completely new level. E Ink will not have the refreshing system ready for ACEP for at least another six months and Remarkable will also have to do lots of engineering work to do. They need convert drawing from a monochrome to full color and also change the entire UI and core files. This will obviously take time.
