There is a big distinction between an e-reader, tablet or smartphone. Although it can be confusing, because they both can all read ebooks. For all sense and purposes an e-reader is a device that mimics real paper with an e-paper display. This display can be powered by E INK, Plastic Logic, or Clearink, but E Ink is the largest one in the game and powers all of the popular models. The advantage of an e-reader is that it does not reflect sunlight, but absorbs it, so you can read outdoors. It also does not have a backlight, so there is no light shining in your eyes.
