Welcome to another Good e-Reader Video! Today we take a look at one of the main features that came with the Apple iOS 5 update issued yesterday. We give you a full review of the Apple Newsstand, the new way to deliver magazines, newspapers.
Apple Newsstand is a new application on the main Apple homescreen on both the first and second generation Apple iPad. We checked it out today and were rather surprised at one of the features no one has really talked about. Most existing magazines and newspapers are standalone apps you download and all of their content is delivered within. Normally you take out a subscription and then deal with Apple for the payment. Newsstand does a good job at uncluttering your various screens with individual apps and condenses it within the main Newsstand.
When you subscribe to newspapers or magazines new issues you subscribe to will automatically be downloaded in the background while you do other things. This will insure when you want to read the latest issue you do not have to manually download anything, it will all occur automatically.
You can shop for new content within the application itself and will also have a dedicated section in the App Store. You will be able to search by categories, top selling and other features that should present viable options to you, even if you are just randomly looking around.
Right now the main selection of content, at least in Canada is rather spartan. There is only around 100 magazines and newspapers you can subscribe too. Noticeably lacking is any major Canadian publications and instead there is the New York Times, Daily, and so on.
