Many analysts had predicted around 400,000 units sold of the seminal Apple iPad 2 this weekend, but Global Equities and Wedbush Securities are looking at a figure closer to a million units sold. If you recall last year Apple sold 300,000 of the 2010 iPad 1 in the first 24 hours
You may have noticed many local news sources over the weekend saying that lines were tempered and not as crazy as the original iPad release. This is mainly due to the fact that the iPad 1 had a limited distribution chain with mainly Apple Stores carrying the product. Over the weekend Bestbuy, Apple Stores, Verizon and others all had the iPad 2 for sale, giving customers more options to purchase it.
Many Bestbuy locations in key areas said that they sold out of the iPad 2 and all of its accessories in under 10 minutes of the 5 PM launch.
Some interesting early on statistics also have come out on the demographic figures of sales. Approximately 60% of all iPad 2 sales went to people who had purchased the iPad 1 and 40% of people polled said it was their first tablet.
If the Apple iPad 2 keeps selling like this, it could blow away last year sales figures, and why not? The new version is lighter and slimmer and features a dual core processor. It also features 2 cameras which users have been asking for.
