Modos was a startup with ambitions to release an E INK laptop and disrupt the industry. They announced it in early 2022 and since then, no product ever came out. They teased it a few times, but it looks like the company pivoted in early 2024 and tried to launch the Modos Paper Monitor. This seemed a more reasonable goal since Boox, Dasung, and Bigme are all involved in this space, so there is an obvious market. However, they were supposed to launch a crowdfunding campaign on Crowd Supply. However, only one update was posted, and the campaign never launched and likely never will.

The company did release a blog in late December about a physical road map. They said a crowdfunding campaign for their monitor would launch in February 2025, but this has not happened either. It does not look like this project will ever be released, but the company has developed some novel speed modes and refresh systems available on GitHub.

Modos is a cautionary tale when a company with no history of making consumer products makes news on all tech blogs with grand ambitions and no follow-through. It is easy to buy into the hype when physical prototypes exist, and nice promotional shots are released. It is a mixed blessing that neither of the two products ever had a crowdfunding campaign, and the developers just ran off with the money.
