Amazon announced it has acquired the podcast start-up Wondery, a move that will add more depth to its non-musical offering available via the Amazon Music app. Wondery already has to its credit some popular podcasts such as Dirty John, Dr. Death, Business Wars, and The Shrink Next Door and reaches out to 20 million unique visitors every month. Post the deal, expect to catch up with the above podcasts via the Amazon Music app itself.
Earlier, we had come across reports about both Apple and Sony Music holding talks with Wondery on a possible acquisition deal. Apple is known to have walked away as it found Wondery’s $300 to $400 million asking price a bit on the higher side. However, it is not known how much Amazon had to fork out eventually to acquire Wondery.
What makes the deal unique is that the Wondery podcasts won’t become exclusive to the Amazon platform. Rather, it will continue to be available from several providers as it used to be before. That way, nothing changes for existing listers of the podcasts. It is just that Amazon Music too will be hosting the podcasts henceforth, introducing more variety to its members. With Wondery under its belt, Amazon Music will be in a better position to compete with Spotify as well.
With a keen interest in tech, I make it a point to keep myself updated on the latest developments in technology and gadgets. That includes smartphones or tablet devices but stretches to even AI and self-driven automobiles, the latter being my latest fad. Besides writing, I like watching videos, reading, listening to music, or experimenting with different recipes. The motion picture is another aspect that interests me a lot, and I'll likely make a film sometime in the future.
