GoodEReader.com has covered the emerging and newly thriving world of digital comics since well before the relaunch of DC Comics’ New 52. That relaunch and the growing number of comic book developers who are making their work available for the widespread full-color tablet market are filling a niche that has been missing from digital publishing. And the fans are responding with millions of comic downloads.
Pocket God, the popular iOS game in which users plot the lives and demise of mischievous pygmies, developed from game status to comic status in a relatively short time to become the first iOS game to have its own comic series. That series has now reached over 500,000 downloads, while the game app consistently stays in the Top 25 on iTunes and has over 7 million downloads to date.
To celebrate the achievement, creators Ape Entertainment and Bolt Creative are releasing an eleventh volume in the series of comics entitled, “A Quest Called Tribe.” In this new development, one of the newer pygmies works to convince the players to help her find her former tribe. Sounds safe enough.
“What makes Pocket God such a breakout hit is its attention to original characters and stories that play off the sadistic, episodic-based app that allows users to control the lives of a group of energetic pygmy islanders,” said Brent E. Erwin, Ape Co-Publisher, in a press release announcing the milestone. “We’re extremely pleased to see how well fans of Pocket God and fans of comic books have taken to the series.”
“We have always had fun developing Pocket God and its many updates, but creating the personalities behind the pygmies and the stories behind them has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of our work,” added Dave Castelnuovo, founder and CEO of Bolt Creative. “The way the Pocket God community has embraced the comic series has been incredible to see and we look forward to continuing to create more quality Pocket God content.”
The creators of the game and the comic series are making free downloads of the comic available to three random commenters on this post. Be sure to include a valid email address to receive your game code if your name is chosen.
