Advent Vega tablet won’t come with Android Market

By

The Advent Vega comes in as a pretty decent package. 10.1 inch of screen goodness, multitouch capacitive display having a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, a powerful 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra T20 processor coupled to 512MB of RAM, a 4GB microSD card slot, built-in 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, and so much more. Battery life is reported to be good, though there aren’t any figures available right now to quantify just how good it is. What’s more, the Advent Vega also has the blessing of the Android 2.2 Froyo, the latest and the best from the Google camp that any tablet PC can have at the moment. And then the price is also reasonably good at £250. In fact, with that price, its more affordable than even the least priced iPad that sells in the UK for £42.

In spite of all the positive aspects, there is one area where the Advent Vega has been found lacking. It does not come with an integrated 3G modem, which means you will have to look for a Wi-Fi hotspot wherever you go. On top of that, there is another area where the Advent Vega scores even less – its lack of access to the official Android market. However, to make things up a bit, Advent product manager Adam Lockyer proudly proclaims there is the Archos AppsLib store which can take care of all app requirements. The Archos AppsLib store currently has 5,000 apps to show off.

Adam Lockyer points out that this is at best a stop gap measure as things will change for the better once the official Android version for tablet PCs, the Gingerbread, comes on to the scene as scheduled in early 2011. “The plan is that when you get to January time, there’s a new release of Android and you’ll be able to get the marketplace on this product,” said Lockyer.

So what is already a nice product will becomes even more better come 2011. One more reason to look forward to the new year.
