Kindle makes it easier to borrow ebooks from Prime Reading
The Amazon Kindle line of e-readers is now making it easier to borrow ebooks from Kindle Unlimited, Prime Reading and the public library, right on your home screen. This is all apart of the 5.13.3 firmware update that was just released today, it is compatible with most devices dating back to the Kindle Voyage.
Amazon Prime Day has huge Kindle deals in Canada and US
I would recommend the Kindle Oasis for Canadians, it is the best e-reader Amazon has ever made and the savings are large enough, that is worth it to pull the trigger. Prime Day is normally lower than Black Friday Sales for e-readers. If you live in the States, the Paperwhite has the most value, in terms of total savings.
Amazon Kindles will be on sale for Prime Day
Amazon has just released a preview of what they are going to be discounting for Prime Day, and it is good news if you want to buy a new Kindle e-Reader. The Kindle Paperwhite will receive a massive $50 discount and will be available for just $79.99. The Kindle Kids Edition will have $35 in savings and will be a paltry $74.99. There should be more Kindle deals when Prime Day occurs on October 13th and 14th, it is likely the entry level Kindle will receive some savings.
Amazon discounts Kindle Essential Bundles
If you are looking to purchase a new Kindle for someone for the upcoming holiday season, you are in luck. Amazon has just discounted various Essential Bundles exclusively for Prime Members. The standard Kindle Essential bundle is available for $89.97, roughly $45 off its normal price, or the Kindle Paperwhite Essentials bundle for $119.97, which is roughly $70 off its normal price. The bundles basically come with a free case, the color can be selected during checkout. They also come with a wall charger, great if someone doesn’t have or use a computer to charge via USB.
Hold off buying a new Kindle
If you are in the market for a new Kindle e-reader, I would wait. Amazon Prime Day is going to occur on October 13-14 of this year and there will be hefty discounts. Last year Amazon levied a 20% discount on most Kindle models, such as the entry level Kindle and Paperwhite. The flagship Kindle Oasis is hardly ever discounted, but I would not be surprised if it was on sale too.
Amazon sells out the Kindle DX in a few hours
Amazon unearthed a secret cache of Kindle DX 9.7 inch e-readers and put them up for sale on September 29th, they had a extremely limited supply. The DX completely sold out in a matter of hours and it is flagged as not available again.
The fact that a ten year old e-reader that did not have a touchscreen and was controlled with a D-Pad, speaks volumes on how people are attracted to large screen devices. Amazon would be best served if they released a 3rd generation Kindle DX.
Amazon Prime Day will occur on October 13-14 2020
Amazon Prime Day was supposed to occur earlier in the year, but COVID disrupted everything. Amazon has sent out an internal email to their business customers and to employees, letting them know that Prime Day will on October 13th and 14th, 2020. Amazon is set to announce this officially next week, likely on Monday.
Amazon is selling the Kindle DX on September 29th
Amazon is going to be selling the Kindle DX once again on September 29th. The company last sold this model back in 2014, when it discovered a cache of these 9.7 inch e-readers in a warehouse. It is going to retail for $199.99 and comes with free worldwide 3G internet access.
Amazon did not announce a new Kindle at their big event
Amazon has their annual Fall event today and the vast majority of new products that were announced had Alexa functionality. They unveiled the 4th generation Echo, various models of the Echo Dot, 3rd generation Echo Show, Fire Sticks, Ring devices and various other things. Sadly, they did not announce a new Kindle at this event, but they rarely do. Kindles used to have big media unveilings, but for the past few years, they just issue a press release and it is normally available right away. This is primarily due to sales, Alexa enabled devices outsell e-readers at a huge ratio, so it makes sense e-readers are not priorities at media events.
Amazon Book Clubs is a new program in early access
Amazon Book Clubs is a new platform that is in early access. People can join public groups, that focus on specific genres, such as mysteries, romance or science-fiction. Book Clubs can be private and invite only, or public. Each of clubs, has little blurb on the focus, as well as their number one recommendation. Clicking on the recommendation takes you to the Amazon listing. I think this is an interesting new system, that should have plenty of new features, before it officially launches.
Would you buy a refurbished Kindle?
There are a few different ways you can buy refurbished Kindle e-readers. The first is Amazon owned woot, which tends to only focus on overstock and used items. You can find anything on this site, and every month they have around 30-100 different Kindle models that go on sale, until they are sold out. Here is an example of a 1 day sale. It is important to note that Woot is only available for US customers.
Amazon also sells refurbished Kindle e-readers on their various websites. Amazon.com has a used selection of only 3 devices, but once in awhile there are lots of them listed. The current list focuses on the entry level Kindle and previous generation Kindle Paperwhites.
Ebay is one of the originals, many people used to exclusively shop on this site, before Amazon became a big thing. You can find plenty of every generation of Kindle e-readers, from lightly used, to sealed in the box and never used. Some vendors buy up the woot stock when it goes on sale and lists it on Ebay to get a little bit of profit. Still, you can find lots of deals.
Amazon Kindle will support the Microsoft Surface Duo
The Microsoft dual screen Surface Duo is coming out on September 10th. This device is running Android 10 and should be good for reading. Amazon has just updated their Android app with full support for reading ebooks on both screens at once. You will get a two page spread, where each page is on a single screen. So it will function like reading a real book, once you have finished reading both pages, you can swipe or tap and both pages will automatically turn, populating both screens with the next two pages.
